There's never enough Classics content here so let's talk about a couple of (as I tell my students) 'load-bearing culture words' in Latin and some of their cultural significance:

beneficium: a favor, kindness, service
officium: a duty, kindness, service
&
munus: a service, favor, obligation, gift.

My apologies, 16th-century Polish magnates, I was not familiar with your game
Chicken War or Hen War (Polish: Wojna kokosza) is the colloquial name for a 1537 anti-royalist and anti-absolutist rokosz (rebellion) by the Polish nobility. The derisive name was coined by the magnates, who for the most part supported the King and claimed that the conflict's only effect was the near-extinction of the local chickens, which were eaten by the nobles gathered for the rokosz at Lwów, in Ruthenian Voivodeship.[1][2] The magnates' choice of "kokosz"—meaning "an egg laying hen"—may have been inspired by a play on words between "kokosz" and the similar-sounding "rokosz". The Chicken War was the first rokosz of the nobility in Polish history.[3]

And, last but not least, very slowly preparing a TTRPG based on the Lombard laws, that is more in my head than written down, but which I do enjoy play testing every now and then... #LangobardRPG, in which players investigate (or commit!) crimes in Lombard Italy in the second half of the 7th century.

The world's most notorious custard-pie thrower is dead. What an obituary. He got Bernard-Henri Lévy seven times.
Known to his army of fans as L’Entarteur or Georges le Gloupier, Godin launched his career as a serial deflator of egos in 1969, when he planted a tarte à la crème on the face of the French novelist Marguerite Duras (“She has a kind of intelligence and cleverness that serves only her own vanity,” he complained), and he went on to “pie” a cast list of celebrities for sins ranging from pomposity to “choosing to function in the service of the capitalist status quo”. The same could not be said of Bernard-Henri Lévy, one of France’s “new philosophers,” whose provocative views on sex, frequent appearances on television and penchant for white silk shirts unbuttoned practically to the navel, had made him a cult figure – and one of Godin’s most satisfying victims. Levy once declared: “I am the most gifted writer of my generation,” and often boasted of his reasonableness and tolerance, but he was forced to endure footage being repeatedly shown on French television of himself, covered in cream, during a visit to the Belgian city of Liège, trying to strangle Godin and shouting: “Get up, or I’ll kick your head in.” Noël Godin was born on September 13 1945 and came to pie-throwing after a rebellious youth in which he scandalised the priests in the confessional by speaking of his “horrible sexual life”, and was thrown out of Liège University after emptying a pot of glue over the head of a law lecturer who had helped write the constitution for the Portuguese dictator António de Oliveira Salazar. He found work at Friends of Film, an obscure magazine published by the Belgian Catholic League. It had a tiny readership, which was just as well, as Godin made up most of his articles. In one he claimed that Louis Armstrong had once been a cannibal and had invested in a film called The Vegetables of Good Will in which Claudia Cardinale played a giant endive. In another he conjured up a fictional blind Thai filmmaker named Vivian Pei, describing her film, The Lotus Flower Will Never Again Grow on the Edge of Your Island, in such convincing terms that an Asian film specialist travelled to Thailand in an effort to track her down. “We’re very careful not to hurt people,’’ he explained. “Well, they are hurt, but always in their amour-propre.” In 1995 Godin published an autobiography, Cream and Punishment. His other targets over the years included the New Wave director Jean-Luc Godard (who charmed his assailant by hailing the attack as a homage to silent film), the French politician Nicolas Sarkozy, the choreographer Maurice Béjart and the Ryanair chairman Michael O’Leary. He tended not to pick Belgian victims, he explained, because few would notice if he did.

In practice the democratic 'revolutionary' type of discipline is more reliable than might be expected. In a workers' army discipline is theoretically voluntary. It is based on class-loyalty, whereas the discipline of a bourgeois conscript army is based ultimately on fear. (The Popular Army that replaced the militias was midway between the two types.) In the militias the bullying and abuse that go on in an ordinary army would never have been tolerated for a moment. The normal military punishments existed, but they were only invoked for very serious offences. When a man refused to obey an order you did not immediately get him punished; you first appealed to him in the name of comradeship. Cynical people with no experience of handling men will say instantly that this would never 'work', but as a matter of fact it does 'work' in the long run.

Overall, the rise of the Medici family in Florence can easily be seen as a story about the super-rich members of a republican polity acquiring the control of the local institutions and the government, and thereafter being able to maintain such control over time until all vestiges of real republicanism disappear, all while their country begins experiencing secular stagnation. This historical example, then, speaks directly against the idea that we can expect the super-rich in power to provide for everybody – in fact, the Medici appear to have provided mostly for themselves, and for their immediate clients and associates, in a context of social immobility and growing economic inequality. Quite clearly, the case of the Medici (similar to that of the Venetian and Dutch elites) also serves to exemplify how we can make use of insights from economic history, even from a relatively remote period, to address pressing challenges faced by our own societies. If one also comes to the depressing conclusion that humankind never truly learns from history, we should counter that ignorance of history only makes it easier to repeat the same mistakes, and to believe the same old lies: in the economic arena, as well as in any other area of human activity.
