Final article for Private Equity Stakeholder Project just went up. I wrote about Medallia's crash which is changing the landscape of the private credit market and is another example of Thoma Bravo just being.. a bad PE firm to invest in. pestakeholder.org/news/thoma-b...
Thoma Bravo’s Medallia in financial hot water in private credit scrutiny
The customer experience management software Medallia has been making headlines recently for having its debt marked down to what is considered a “distressed” level.

Now: About 100 rank and file Legal Aid Society attorneys and allies are rallying outside Brooklyn Criminal Court after a woman was forced to give birth in arraignment.

They’re discussing other instances of clients dying in custody & harsher punishments for NYC’s poor.

Yesterday Mayor Mamdani released his executive budget for FY27, and NYC PLAN is disappointed to see that it falls $97million short of his promise to fund our libraries at 0.5% of the city expense budget.

Our libraries deserve stable and increased funding, and we’re ready to continue this fight!

"The mayor has kept Tisch, walked back from a pledge to abolish the gang database, slow-rolled a promise to disband the city’s anti-riot squad (a big enough retreat that Tisch herself appeared to recently joke about it on stage) and has generally avoided touching the third rail of NYPD reform."
My thoughts on Mamdani and the NYPD, expanding on my sense that he's determined that he can either pursue his big-ticket agenda items around housing and childcare or wrangle the police, and he's going with the former

I think that as economists we should be a lot more concerned that everyone feels like they've got poorer when the data show they haven't. We certainly shouldn't just be assuming that the customers are wrong, rather than that we're no longer measuring things that are most relevant to wellbeing

The Private Equity Stakeholder Project is hosting a webinar on April 15th at 1:00 pm on private equity in Michigan. Register here: us02web.zoom.us/webinar/regi...
Welcome! You are invited to join a webinar: Wall Street in the Wolverine State: How private equity impacts Michigan. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email about joining the webinar.
Private equity firms have become increasingly powerful players in Michigan’s economy, with PE-owned companies employing 10% of the state’s private sector workforce. These investment firms are buying up companies and real estate across sectors including healthcare, housing, manufacturing, and retail, often pursuing rapid profits that can lead to layoffs, rising costs, and instability for workers and communities. Join the Private Equity Stakeholder Project for a webinar examining how private equity is reshaping Michigan’s economy and affecting residents. Drawing on new research, this discussion will explore the ways private equity business practices can influence housing affordability, job quality, public services, and access to essential resources. Panelists will also discuss impacts on workers and communities across industries, including cases involving layoffs, bankruptcies, and labor disputes tied to private equity-backed companies operating in Michigan. The webinar will feature perspectives from: - Theo Gantos, a manufactured housing resident and advocate whose community, North Morris Estates, was owned by Alden Global Capital-affiliated Homes of America. - Shayla McKitrick, an American Sign Language interpreter at a private equity-owned company. Shayla has been organizing a union at her workplace and is facing the closure of the Rochester Hills, Michigan call center where she works. - Former Congressman Andy Levin, a longtime champion of workers’ rights and economic justice. Together, the panel will discuss how private equity ownership affects Michiganders and what policymakers, advocates, and communities can do to strengthen accountability. By registering for this webinar, you agree to receive occasional email updates from the Private Equity Stakeholder Project. We will never sell your information or email.
