Okay I'm reading about private equity and its new reaches into literary estates, specially a company Atticus Works recently set up by Richard Hurowitz. Very interested to know what people think this will look like and what effects it will have

Sharing again this essay I published last year - amazingly edited by the wonderful @marinabenjamin.bsky.social for @aeon.co. One of the bits of writing of which I’m most proud

UCU members at Brighton University face the threat of derecognition. We have called an emergency rally tomorrow at 1:15pm.

It would be amazing to see as many #TUC26 delegates as possible in attendance.

This is utterly horrendous for everyone working and studying at University of Brighton, & the community more widely. It also feels like Brighton is the canary in the mine – their unjustifiable 2023 cuts have since been emulated across the sector. Will this removal of workers' rights come for us all?
***URGENT PLEASE SHARE*** University of Brighton management have announced today that they ‘give notice of termination of all collective agreements’. This is a fundamental erasure of workers' rights. Management have announced the termination of all contractual documents, which includes:

Horrendous news. The situation at universities keeps getting grimmer
Sacking news: I scored 3rd out of 4 and therefore only qualify for a 0.5 post, with no redundancy payment because it's a contract variation rather than a dismissal. My 2.5 colleagues are thankfully therefore OK

Well, it’s Sacking Day (to the tune of Tannenbaum), when we learn via Teams calls which one of the 4 of us left is to go.

That will leave 3 (from 12) to teach English Language, Literature and Creative Writing and supervise 25 PhD students. I’m sure management have thought this through carefully.

Enjoying listening to Vivian Gornick’s The Situation and the Story so much! There aren’t many books that so neatly layout the problems of nonfiction storytelling. Strong recommend to anyone working on essay, nonfiction, or memoir.

Most of my students work already! I’m sure they’ll be super happy to do some work for free on top of the work they’re already doing to afford the education they have actually chosen to study 🙃

All undergraduates should get work-based learning, v-cs say

I think I noted during the recent Belfast riots that a certain kind of man is not really interested in protecting women & girls; he's interested in protecting the exclusive right of his kind of man to abuse and control women and girls.
Men will send me emails like this and then go rampaging on the streets of Dover and Portsmouth claiming they want to keep refugees out in order to “PROTECT OUR WOMEN!”
Not a single one of the young male refugees I’ve worked with has ever spoken to me with such violent misogyny.
