These stunning mats of slender-leaved ice plants looked especially apt in the lava fields of Lanzarote today as they resembled patches of molten rock. These hardy wee plants are incredibly well adapted to withstand such a harsh, dry environment

A common green grasshopper in Menstrie Glen in the Ochils this morning. Males display to females by rubbing their legs against their wings to create a long, loud, 'churring' song. After mating, the eggs are laid in the soil ready to hatch the following spring
