At one point, trying to write my book about birth control (still in progress), I realized that I may have to write a history of the concept of “side effects” in general.

Am I being over-sensitive here or does the term “side effects” have an inherent negative connotation and therefore this headline is sci-comm malpractice?
The “side effects” are reduced risk of serious cardiac complications and reduced risk of all-cause cardiac events.

Just a reminder that @contingent-mag.bsky.social would absolutely love to run a mailbag on the dumbass arguments about "low enrollment majors" and other things contained in this nested thread if there's a NTT historian out there who wants to pitch it.
Years ago our admin did a red and black report. It took salaries & how much $ each instructor made in tuition $ for classes we taught-you were in the red or black. They released numbers once & shut it down bc humanities were producing huge $ for uni & engineers, business and scientists were losing $
These are “low enrollment” majors but the classes are regularly at capacity. They changed the funding structure a few years ago here, switching the allocation from course enrollments to majors then blamed these departments for a structural, top-down change. This is entirely a political choice.

I am driving two hours each way to/from work on my teaching days, and it is very apparent a few weeks in that I need to up my audiobook listening game. So, what are your favorites? I especially enjoy multiple narrators / full casts.

there is a thought piece in my brain about getting a tenure-track job at the weirdest/worst possible time for higher ed, but I am so thoroughly burnt out by the decade-long process of trying to get said job and then starting it next month, that it will probably stay in there.
