Writer on a few websites. Physical media hoarder. Semi-professional kvetcher. Definitely NOT an ice cream eating motherfucker.

I'm writing about all of Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time here: https://keviniskevin.medium.com/
This was a true joy to listen to and write about. And yes, one can feel joy when listening to Joy Division.
WE RECOMMEND: Joy Division: Eternal

The comprehensive Joy Division collection Eternal reintroduces the band behind the myth: hardworking, dynamic performers who crafted a new sound while captivating audiences.

So a while back, I started writing about all of Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time for the fun of it. I stopped for a while, but I decided to pick it back up again. You can read them all here! keviniskevin.medium.com

I also wrote about Frankie Rose's latest for @spectrumculture.bsky.social, which was the polar opposite of Bloc Party in a lot of ways: an album about deep personal trauma that keeps you at arms length and allows the music to fill in the blanks. Good stuff! spectrumculture.com/2026/09/21/f...
Frankie Rose: Hila - Spectrum Culture
Hila delves further into a synth-constructed chasm, eschewing pop almost entirely while still seeking to ground her explorations in something tangible and real.

I wrote about Bloc Party's latest for @spectrumculture.bsky.social. A spectacle of cringe that is made all the worse for the limp, gormless compositions accompanying Kele Okereke's diary entries. There's a world where an album like this could have been interesting, but alas.

I'm in the same boat in that I've heard *about* Langley without hearing her stuff. Not in the grocery store, not in CVS. Can't even recall hearing her in local bars, which is where I hear a LOT of current pop hits.

And yeah, NYC, but Queens is the most country-curious part of NYC.
I’m not trying to be all Mr. Obscurity but I think it’s fascinating that I *still* have never heard this song. I’m a middle-aged white guy who likes guitar music, you’d think something would feed it to me. Not even the grocery store?
Ella Langley’s hit song ‘Choosin’ Texas’ tops Mariah Carey’s record for ‘All I Want for Christmas Is You’ with its 23rd week as No. 1 in the Billboard “Hot 100” chart.

I feel like the more time passes, the more bizarre it feels that American Beauty was ever a critical darling.
Name a film that aged like milk.

I went to one of the two Refused reunion gigs in 2011, and while Refused were great, their opener was Cerebral Ballzy who remain the worst fucking band I've ever seen.

And the show was at Terminal 5, so it's incredible that I had a good time at all.

Over at @spectrumculture.bsky.social, I wrote about Ted Leo's 2007 album, an ambitious work that synthesizes many of his influences into an unwieldy whole that is (like all of his albums) a worthwhile listen. Very happy to revisit it: spectrumculture.com/2026/09/08/r...
Rediscover: Ted Leo and the Pharmacists: Living with the Living - Spectrum Culture
Living with the Living is the record most tied to Ted Leo’s artistic ethos, one which he holds fast to this day: being engaged, fiercely independent, and ready to go wherever the roads ahead may lead.

There are a bunch of @tedleo.bsky.social covers I could pick for this; "Rave On" by Buddy Holly and "Fisherman's Blues" by the Waterboys come immediately to mind.

Also, I saw Patrick Stickles do "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" in the style of Bruce with string lights plugged into a pedal.
Favorite cover you saw live?

Top of mind for me is FIDLAR *opening* their show with a ribcage-rattling cover of Beastie Boys's "Sabotage." Talk about One Weird Trick to make a crowd high-energy from the jump

Recently: NIN covering "I'm Afraid of Americans"
Are you kidding, have our noble bootleggers stepped up to document these live covers

My latest for @spectrumculture.bsky.social is about an early '00s New York band who had a moment in the wilderness after their peak who have since returned to form. In a year when the Strokes floundered, Interpol soldier on: spectrumculture.com/2026/08/31/i...
Interpol: This Mirror Weighs a Ton - Spectrum Culture
Even if the moments of brilliance that once came so naturally to Interpol are harder to conjure, still pulling them off on their newest album is an appreciable talent.

Pertaining to Strokes Discourse: I feel prompted to opine on the take from a certain Popular Music Critic who dismissed the lukewarm reactions to Reality Awaits as stemming from a collective desire for the Strokes to make another Is This It. This was a perplexing take for a few reasons (cont'd.):

I also wrote about Sonic Youth's second "sellout" record, which wasn't really a sellout album in that Sonic Youth was the sort of band that couldn't compromise themselves if they tried.

My participation in Strokes Discourse for @spectrumculture.bsky.social is as follows: Reality Awaits is fine, a difficult listen that I may change my mind on in a few years but doesn't really work for me right now.

I feel like the FA has to make Tuchel England manager for life now.
🚨 President Donald Trump on Thomas Tuchel decisions: “You have a great player in England, who I played golf with, he is Harry Kane...

…and maybe England MADE A MISTAKE when they put him as a defensive player”.

“They took a lead and they put their best player at defending?”
