I am tired of having to pretend that the value of studying my discipline solely rests on the "marketable skills" we teach. Sometimes things are just worth knowing and doing because they make your life bigger and richer.
I don't want to make civic arguments about history. I don't want to make instrumentalist arguments about history. I want engineers to understand my discipline is rigorous too and if not I want to be able to make fun of them forever because no historian ever built a bridge that broke in the wind.

"Software developers are not okay"

The software industry is becoming increasingly hostile to those who work in it. The uncertainty is affecting even those who believe in the promises of tech.

every single one of these linked processes stems from thinking of education in general, & higher ed in particular, as a resource frontier: a virgin territory or untapped resource of as-yet uncaptured potential wealth that now must be harvested / optimized / extracted. this mindset is our true target
Down with the data-harvesting-edtech-private-equitization of education.
What if educational spaces worked to become one of the few places in life our students are not constantly surveilled under constant threat conditions?

there’s one true answer but it’s the correct one

five minutes after game of thrones - the last true monoculture show - ended, we all collectively agreed not to talk about it again, and house of the dragon/knight of the seven kingdoms haven’t recaptured a fraction of that cultural presence
What TV show got so bad it effectively destroyed your appreciation for the show when it was was good?

THAT IS NOT THE ONLY THING EDUCATION IS FOR! IT ISN’T EVEN THE MAIN THING!
'Amanda Spielman, who previously led education watchdog Ofsted from 2017 to 2023, warned too many people are being misled by the allure of university courses that fail to result in improved economic and life outcomes.'

Ofsted has such a sterling reputation.

Too bad no one funded a sex cult focused on climate change! The different media dynamics between the very real threat of global warming (aloofness) and the imagined AI machine apocalypse (alarm) should be studied in great depth.

Because of that, "human-like" or even "superhuman" intelligence will aways be an impossible target.

Find your niche.

If you don't like hiking, don't just to have the experience.

If you don't especially care about seeing historical landmarks, cool, see the convenient ones.

Like trying new foods and dishes? Hit up the restaurants, and find acceptable ways to chill at them.
