1/ SUMMER READING #4: RETAIN YOUR RIGHTS
Legislative reform is slow. Publishing is not on hold while we wait. #RightsRetention is what researchers and institutions can do right now to keep control of their own work and to open access without waiting for anyone’s permission.

1/ LEARNING DOES NOT STOP AT THE CLASSROOM DOOR
Action 09/09 - #LetLibrariesBeLibraries
Libraries support learning, from formal education to lifelong learners. Yet EU education exceptions for digital materials only cover formal institutions. Extend these provisions to libraries.

1/ SUMMER READING #3: SECONDARY PUBLICATION RIGHT
Research funded by the public belongs to the public.
#SecondaryPublishingRights (SPR) turn that principle into practice.

1/ OUT OF COMMERCE SHOULD NOT MEAN OUT OF REACH
Action 08/09 - #LetLibrariesBeLibraries
Millions of works sit on shelves but can’t be shared. Publishers cease offering titles before libraries no longer need them. Enabling access doesn't lead to lost sales of out-of-print titles.

IS COPYRIGHT LAW KEEPING UP WITH YOUR WORK?
Librarians, researchers, and library associations: silence gets legislated around. If you don't speak up, someone else will speak for you. Quiet loses. Loud wins.

1/ SUMMER READING #2: #EBOOKS & #ELENDING
Libraries once owned the books on their shelves. In the digital world, they are constrained by restrictive licences, unfair contracts & digital locks. The shift from physical to digital transferred power from #libraries to rightholders.
August 14, 2026 at 8:01 AM
1/ LIBRARY WALLS SHOULD NOT BE DIGITAL BARRIERS
Action 07/09 - #LetLibrariesBeLibraries
As activity moves online, the law should allow libraries to do digitally what they do in person. Restrictions on remote access affect rural communities & those with mobility issues most.
August 12, 2026 at 9:01 AM
1/ SUMMER READING #1: AI
Europe wants an #AI ecosystem that serves science, #research and the public. It also has a #copyright framework being pulled in the opposite direction. What is at stake is not just access to knowledge, but Europe's ability to compete.
August 7, 2026 at 8:01 AM
1/ LET LIBRARIES LEND E-BOOKS LIKE BOOKS
Action 06/09 - #LetLibrariesBeLibraries
The EU's highest court recognised e-Lending as legitimate in 2016. A ruling never codified into law. Libraries still cannot acquire & lend e-Books on the same terms as physical books. Fix this.

1/ SCRUTINISE THE MARKETS LIBRARIES DEPEND ON
Action 05/09 - #LetLibrariesBeLibraries
When information markets work, they support education, research & access to knowledge. When too much power rests with a few players, libraries & their users pay the price. Time to investigate.
