Education Professor at UC Riverside who specializes in stratification, pedagogy, and dominating his kids at sports
One of the worst things schools have done in the past decade is put everything on screens. Is my kid, seated across the table from me, working on his science homework or watching YouTube videos of dancing capybaras? I have no idea.

Eventually, you realize we only need so many plumbers. There are a finite number of toilets and salaries will reflect that

Go to college, kids

(And make it more affordable, adults)
Average salaries looking even worse than the median for non-college occupations. That suggests even in the better paid trades, there's a relatively low wage ceiling.

This chart from Thomas Piketty illustrates what Jefferson Cowie calls “the Great Exception,” the period of the New Deal Order from the 1930s to the 1970s when inequality was low, and rates of unionization and federal marginal tax rates were high.

Chevron wins!
Major news in the California governor race:

– Gavin Newsom officially endorses Xavier Becerra

– Tom Steyer concedes and throws his support behind Becerra: "It would be a travesty for Steve Hilton to win the governorship, and Californians must unite behind Xavier Becerra to ensure he does not."

The College Board really just floats in the ideological currents of the moment, contributing nothing
Ugh. Fed 39 sure, Gettysburg Address yes, Emancipation Proclamation, fine (but not really needed for political science when the reconstruction amendments are required) but Smith is just 🤡

In the age of AI, who needs humanities 🫠
On Friday afternoon before the Bank Holiday, colleagues in the Humanities department were called to a meeting on Tuesday.
They were informed that the University Portfolio Review had decided that English Language, English Literature, Philosophy, History & Creative Writing UG degrees would close
Aye. Heard today that my university is closing UG History, Philosophy, English Lit, Linguistics, and Creative Writing in one go.

The fourth richest man owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.

The fifth richest man owns The Washington Post.

And now the sixth richest could soon take over both Paramount and Warner Bros.

See the problem here?

There is no way to spend billions of dollars in one life time. Even ten mansions won't cost that much. At some point, the only use for money is power.

Billionaires are not compatible with democracy.

someone tell the California ACLU who is disproportionately more likely to be killed in traffic accidents including those involving people under the influence
The California ACLU is staunchly opposed to the ignition interlock device program and is a big reason that it has not been expanded. Despite the fact that California heavily subsidizes the cost for low-income drunk drivers, the ACLU says that the program is a form of "racialized wealth extraction."

As a nineties kid, the station wagon argument lands with me because I loved sitting in the rear-facing back seats and making dumb faces at the drivers be hind me. As an adult, though, I realize now one rear-end accident and my little ass would have died
Sean Duffy on slashing fuel economy standards: "This rule will actually allow you to bring back the 1970s station wagon. Maybe a little wood paneling on the side. We can bring back choice to consumers."

In my many many conversations with young people about race, this generally rings true. But most who i talk to still tend to understand racism as an interpersonal problem rather than a structural/policy one.
2/🧵 New piece with @jakemgrumbach.bsky.social in @NewRepublic: We analyzed 60,000+ respondents in the 2024 Cooperative Election Study. Gen Z has the lowest racial resentment of any generation. The generational shift overwhelms the education divide that supposedly defines modern politics.
The Shocking Truth About Gen Z Voters Is That They’re Pretty Great
Stop panicking: They are the most progressive generation ever, especially on race. If that surprises you, you’ve been listening to the wrong story.

It’s not simply important to denounce political violence because it looks bad not to. It’s the right thing to do on the merits. Even more specifically to this moment it’s important because the forces of fascism are inherently better at political violence than the forces of civic democracy.
