Dating from the 3rd century AD during the pivotal transition between the late Yayoi and early Kofun periods, this extraordinary gilt-bronze sword pommel ornament (kanduchi-no-tsurugi / kan-tou-shou-tou) from the Cleveland Museum of Art stands as a testament to the sophisticated metalworking traditions and elite symbols of power in ancient Japan. Cast in openwork bronze and enveloped in fire-gilded gold, the fitting features a stylized dragon head (ryū) emerging gracefully within a circular ring. The creature’s jaws part to reveal a small spherical jewel (hōju) suspended between its teeth, while its sweeping crest and arching neck mimic the dynamic curves of the surrounding frame, which is itself chased with undulating scroll and cloud motifs. Below the ring, a rectangular tang pierced with a central rivet hole reveals how the ornament was originally secured onto the wooden hilt of a prestige sword (tachi). The technique of mercury fire-gilding (kin-dokō) applied across the cast surface created an incandescent gold luster designed to catch the sunlight during courtly gatherings and state ceremonies. Visually, the artifact presents a striking interplay between pristine craft and the quiet marks of time. Isolated within its openwork ring, the dragon’s fierce yet elegant silhouette retains its kinetic energy, offering a rare and intimate glimpse into the mythic imagination, sacred symbolism, and master casting techniques that laid the foundation for Japan’s enduring metalwork heritage.

Up at Cruagh Woods at the outskirts of Dublin. This tree went over in a storm several years ago but still continues to show some growth every year.
