MP for Norwich South “The ultimate hidden truth of the world is that it is something we make and could just as easily make differently” - David Graeber
Pinned
In the more than decade I have had the privilege of serving as your MP for Norwich South, I don’t think I have ever attended a meeting quite as moving as the one we held in Parliament this week.

1/2 This summer, Reform-led Kent County Council voted to include Oaken Wood in its minerals plan.

If approved, at least 41 hectares of this ancient woodland would be destroyed, making it the largest loss of ancient woodland in England this century.

Was great to speak at the launch of Labour Defence and Security Network last week.

I spoke about the need for a defence strategy built on true consent, democratic agency, and public control of essentials.

We can't keep substituting debates about % of GDP for a real discussion on national security.
This week we formally launched in Parliament, alongside our first pamphlet, Defending Britain, Defending Values 🌹

Thank you to UKspace for supporting its publication, and to everyone who joined us.

For me, it comes down to this: when compounding crises threaten our water supply, do we want corporations and billionaires in control of it?

Yesterday was an absolute whirlwind.

We finally saw a record number of MPs step up and support public ownership of water, something I’ve spent years fighting for.

To top it off, I got to chat with Becky Hill who came to show her support, look me in the eye, and say, “This is the Hill I’ll die on.”

I spoke at a roundtable put on by @openrightsgroup.org to discuss the UK’s digital sovereignty.

We spoke about the urgent need for the government to reduce dependence on Big Tech firms and looked at alternatives such as open-source technology that could help us get there.

1/3 Cancer survivors should not be punished for having had cancer. Yet many face travel insurance premiums or are denied cover altogether, even when they’re declared fit to travel by the NHS.

Support for bringing water back into public ownership is rising, and MPs are taking notice.

If you want clean rivers and seas, ask your MP to join next week's debate.

Help me get them there! It takes 2 minutes: actionnetwork.org/letters/ask-...

1/2 UK taxpayers should not be funding contracts for companies linked to violations of international law.

Yet some firms allegedly connected to the supply chains used in attacks on Palestinians remain eligible for public contracts.

1/3 With food prices continuing to rise, it is more important than ever to take a strategic approach to food policy.

1/3 Small waters, including ponds and small lakes, are the unsung heavy hitters of biodiversity.

But despite their critical importance, small waters are excluded from proper monitoring and management by the Government.

1/3 The Prime Minister’s apology on Gaza was a start. But words need to be backed up with decisive action.

That apology isn’t consistent with the Home Office continuing to block the evacuation of dozens of women and children.

1/3 I have written to the Energy Secretary, urging her to uphold Labour’s manifesto pledge not to issue new licences for North Sea oil and gas fields.

1/3 Jason Arday is dead at 41 after weeks of brutal, relentless public scrutiny and years of abuse.

In the days leading up to his death, 249 articles were written about Arday. These reached way beyond what could be reasonably considered in the public interest.

“The whole thing is such a massive scam [..] that most people can’t believe it.”

Recently I hosted a screening of the docu-drama exposing the sewage scandal, Dirty Business, in Norwich.

It was important to me to platform the real people behind the show, like Ash Smith of @windrushwasp.bsky.social.

The Uberisation of water must be stopped.

Profiting from scarcity in an essential of life is bad enough. But these companies helped create the scarcity. 🧵

I'll bet you these projects will never see a large chunk of that money.

We pay for the system through our bills. Yet almost 1/3 of them go to returns for investors and creditors.

We pay for the infrastructure, for the debt, for the profits. And they keep asking for more.

We need public ownership.

Meta ordered to pay $537m after a jury found they knowingly harmed children's mental health.

The harms of social media aren't a bug. They're a feature.

A blanket ban won't fix a business model built around addiction and surveillance.

To protect young people, we need to take on Big Tech directly.
