We have this terrible inclination to make things the center of our identity that shouldn't be, which is why I just ate a curried lentil egg white omelet

Gray Dec days demand a sure thing. Braised Pork Loin with Prunes (Porc aux pruneaux), skillet ratatouille seasoned w/ za’atar, & white beans braised in yesterdays garlic broth w/ shallots, serrano. The ultimate seduction menu—for my beautiful wife, who deserves nothing less

Even if I knew that tomorrow, that Jesus of Nazareth Himself was returning, as Christian’s have anticipated for 2000 years, in the spirit of Luther, I would still work out today, do the dishes, pay my mortgage, kiss my wife, & make this chicken lentil soup for post run lunch

5:30 am arrived too soon, with domestic duties and coffee. But 4.15 miles later, I conquered morning run like Isaac reclaiming Esau’s birthright. Electric guitar, bass, and drums in my ears chased away the 38 minutes, turning each step into a victorious shadow boxing match

Pastors bourbon bar at his annual St. Nicholas Party was looking good this year, I especially loved this Pure Kentucky. The label seems lame but the bourbon was fantastic

Friday: the kitchen’s closed, shortly the week’s grind will pause, & the night belongs for a little bit at least, to bourbon & smoked tenderloin. Tonight, we trade aprons for our Pastors' annual St. Nicholas party. Work can wait—there’s a seat by the fire calling. Cheers to that

Research admin life: a rushing river. You claw to the shore for a brief reprieve late yesterday, thinking you've made progress—only to wake up and find the current swept it all downstream overnight.

McCoy Tyner, "Peresina," from Expansions (1968). Great stuff, with solos here by Wayne Shorter and Tyner.

Thursday night. The family kitchen roars back to life. Spicy fennel sausage tortellini soup steaming up the windows, warming the bones before my girls’ choir fills the night with their voices. Coldest night of the week? Let it come. We’ve got heat in every sense of the word.

If the new Pres continued promises of legal revenge against his political enemies come to fruition, & go from rhetorical slinging of red meat to masses to actual legal pursuits, it will be a disaster for all of us, including those of you who haven't thought this through

The cold bitter wind sweeping through KY this morning feels like a brisk Midwest hello. The dog was pleading to go back home. Guess it’s time to crack open The New Midwestern Table and let the kitchen do the warming. Chili, casseroles, or maybe just something hearty—stay tuned

Attended Advent service tonight—a tapestry of chanting, ancient hymns, Scripture, and prayer. A surreal glimpse into a fellowship of believers that transcends time and space, uniting past, present, and eternity as we worship a crucified God man.

I finished watching this movie last night more than a decade after its release. I loved it-genuinely a fantastic picture. The Artist’ whispers what words can’t: Ego dims the spotlight, love shares the stage, and fame dances best when we embrace the silence.

Two mile dog walks before sunrise, a $5M proposal draft polished by lunch, a 5K run on my lunch break. Kitchens closed & eyeing the advent service tonight to close out the day. Who needs rest when you’re racing against the clock and the calendar?
