Post–Grateful Dead live era: shows, setlists, listening notes. Lutheran. Husband. Father. Shooting photos like confession. Tacos to spite the Devil.
New post:

February 1996: Bob Weir hires Chuck Berry's keyboardist for Mardi Gras. April 1996: Phil Lesh walks onstage unannounced at the Fillmore. The signs were there—the music wasn't over:

Periodic reminder: I’m still disappointed that the folks who treated Left Behind as their eschatology study guide aren’t absolutely delighted by a world leader pitching a “peace deal with Israel,” with a bunch of nations— even the papacy—RSVP’ing.

Where’s your sense of fun?

The night Jerry Garcia died, Bob Weir took the stage anyway: "Good music can make sad times better." From the Dead's last tour to Ratdog's first east coast tour, here's Summer/Fall 1995—when three decades ended and something new began.

Spring ’95 was chaos in the headlines—& the Dead, at peak earnings, looked backward w/bust-outs “Visions of Johanna” & Phil’s debut of “Unbroken Chain.” Meanwhile, Bobby was building the future: the earliest RatDog shows that hint at what came next.

1995 Was a Lot Spring 1995 was a lot, even by today’s standards. The OJ Simpson murder trial became a national broadcast. A doomsday cult…

New Field Guide: “The Infernal Dance.”

Before the post–’95 universe fully ignites, 1994 shows first sparks—Phil sitting in with Crosby & Nash, Phil in a tux conducting Stravinsky’s Firebird, & Bob Weir’s one-off Japan experiment (w/ Bill Murray showing up).

Wednesday. You can smell Rome burning, but there’s a nice violin somewhere in the evening. Tonight’s dinner:

I roasted pork tenderloin with Ras El Hanot spice, homemade cranberry compote, roasted spiced butternut squash, fresh black beans, and jasmine rice.

Tuesday night dinner: whole family has struggled to recover from illness the last 7-10 days.

So I pulled out Islak Burgers-Turkish wet burgers…w/ homemade buns and mashed potatoes.

I think we feel better already. My recipe was a little different but here's one:

Istanbul-Style Wet Burger (Islak Burger)
Late-night crowds go wild for the delicious Islak "wet burgers" of Istanbul's Taksim Square. When a last minute trip to Turkey isn't possible, this recipe is a close second.

Watched 2 episodes of the X Files last night with my wife and dogs while Rome burned. I've only ever seen 5 episodes in my entire life

As a longtime Grateful Dead fan, it’s wild that we’re 31+ years past 1995—& the music never stopped. I’m building a practical listening field guide to what the members did after the Dead.
