So, our read is as follows:
1) It's not linear. This isn't a surprise as the change of the sunset times from solstice to solstice is also not linear (it's sinusoidal ... on it's mother's side).
2) We get closer if we don't consider the solstices, rather the earliest and latest sunset times.

I remember after the subprime / global crash, there was talk of needing non-linear mathematics & fuzzy logic to understand the crash, because no economists (money astrolgers) had modelled or predicted it.
Turns out it was easier than that to explain (and others had been predicting it & bet on it)
