Kirsty has the qualifications to be a nurse. Newcastle has empty lecture halls and hospitals that need staff. HM Treasury capped funded training places at 180, then cut it to 165. She was locked out not by ability but by a political choice dressed up as financial constraint. Read her story.

Kirsty's Story
Kirsty, 29, from Newcastle upon Tyne North in the North East, wanted to train as a nurse to serve her community's healthcare needs. Despite having the qualifications and determination, she found herself blocked by a system that caps training places below demand. Health Education England's budget constraints, imposed by HM Treasury, treat public investment in healthcare training as a cost to minimize rather than the foundation of patient care. The North East has qualified candidates ready to train and hospitals that need staff, but Westminster's spending limits create artificial scarcity where none should exist. This episode examines how Treasury decisions that treat the government as though it could run out of pounds directly impact individual lives and community health outcomes. Disclosure: This story represents broader systemic issues affecting healthcare training across the UK.

Please show support if you can! 🙌

It’s excellent that the Greens are doing this. Unsurprisingly it’s had almost zero coverage in the media outlets (who also do a shockingly poor job of telling everyone about NHS privatisation).

The Jarrow Crusade, in which 200 unemployed men marched to London calling for government intervention to restore jobs, began on this day 1936. Unsuccessful at the time, but helped to shape postwar attitudes to employment and social justice.

The road winds through the moor beneath a golden sky,
Where rain and sunlight meet as storms drift by.
Dark clouds gather, yet the evening burns bright,
And the wet road glimmers in the jewelled light.

It's not about the triple lock vs social care. It's that a government prefers to spend money on bombs, AI or tax breaks for wealthy people and says - make do with what's left for NHS and social care

I sometimes wonder how much the fact that Health ministers are usually drawn from the demographic that uses the NHS the least (able bodied, white men, young-middle aged) is a factor in it's issues.
It probably plays a part in the obsession with apps and convenience over continuity and human contact.

My solidarity with everyone joining the protests this week to kick Palantir out of our NHS.

As I said in Parliament recently: from serious concerns over its handling of patient data to its human rights record, this US tech giant should have no role in our NHS.

I visited our GP practice today, to see the appropriate specialist nurse (I have diabetes and CKD). I was listened sympathetically, prescribed new meds, and given advice and a follow-up appointment.

So this is just a simple thank you to the ghost of Aneurin Bevan, and to our wonderful, unique #NHS!

We're calling on every NHS trust and ICB to reject Palantir, and on the government to use the break clause and end the contract.

Both are “hostile forces that violate the right to health, violate health and data sovereignty and facilitate state violence.”
