Bluesky's head of trust and safety runs all replies through an LLM to decide who to block which leads to him creating a perfect sycophantic bubble for himself. Someone really does not understand his job.

Bluesky Corp is a clown show.

It feels like journals are only a filter for baseline quality, there really is a niche out there for people to personally curate reading lists for others. There is a cottage industry for this in other content like movies, so it would be cool for an academic to get paid to specialize in this way

That sounds bad! Drexel’s making some real mistakes here.
If you are part of an academic society or a professor of any kind, public statements that you do not condone Drexel cutting off the academy of natural sciences from the public of Philadelphia is very important right now. We need your voices. Urgently.

Ironically, my original interview with the journalist I spoke with was primarily about how "inconsistencies" can come from gender bias in investigatory processes and then be blamed on survivors.

It was the inspiration for this thread--but none of these points made it into any USA Today article:
All of this. I also want to add that, in my research, I found that a lot of “inconsistencies” in a victim’s story actually came from gender bias affecting investigators’ record keeping and interview methods.
Just a reminder that people don’t always realize they were raped in the immediate aftermath. It can take hours, days, months, and even years to realize you were raped, and it doesn’t make it any less true. There are many kinds of responses, including fawning and trying to appease your rapist

I actually get my information from people who understand exactly what it is and why it’s a fucking autocorrect slot machine that does nothing but extract. This is hot garbage.

Just because I have ethics and a spine doesn’t mean I don’t also engage critical thinking. Slop boosters don’t.
feels like there is a group of smart and well-intentioned people who long ago made up their minds that AI Is Bad, swore off using it, and now get all their info about AI from each other. not saying they're wrong that ai is bad! but i think they're gradually losing touch with what it is and does
I really wasn’t trying to start a fight with Prof. Bender but now that she has created a long thread subtweeting me and her disciples are all yelling at me, let me just say that this is the crux right here. She seems to respond as though I am describing something a priori impossible.

Χαίρε! Some translations for those that need them:

άνθρωπος παρθένος = maid like dude
άνθρωπος ίσχυρός = strong dude
It is too late, I have already depicted myself as the άνθρωπος ίσχυρός and you as the άνθρωπος παρθένος 🫵

Yes every woman has been harassed, many assaulted. But every woman has also experienced invisible loss from moments she avoided harassment. She felt a space becoming unsafe, so she left, while men stayed on. And in leaving, she lost: opportunities, experiences, learning, promotions, even simply fun.

Hyperlink text should make sense when read out of context. Screen reader users can navigate from link to link, and can listen to links in a list. When navigating this way, only the link is read. So "click here" or "read more" won't make sense.

This man is a monster. He seeks out women survivors because he hates them. And he hates them because he hates himself. He has harassed me and other women survivors many times over the years. It must end. He should never have a job anywhere.

LLMs are predictive language models.

They do not 'think' or 'feel', they are designed to produce output that looks / sounds like human language.

If an LLM produces the phrase, "I feel pain," it is still just output that looks / sounds like human language.

There is nothing to explain here.
Can the new cutting-edge AI models feel pain? They at least behave as if they do, according to a recent study.

The work, which has not been peer reviewed, has divided #AI researchers. https://scim.ag/4hHU6BA

And now all the genAI CEO's keep coming out in public to announce they forgot how to read and do math and can't remember their address etc
