I saw a new to me species today - the hornet fly (Genus Spilomyia)! I love mimicry in nature and hoverflies are experts. I've seen bee mimicking flies before, but this hornet mimic was quite cool. The markings read "hornet" from a few feet away until I got up close and saw the tell-tale fly eyes.

A good friend of mine is in Ukraine for 2 weeks and staying in cities that are heavily bombed, and constantly wondering if she is hurt is overwhelming. My heart breaks for people whose loved ones live in war zones. Holding that uncertainty with no end must be torture. Fuck war, fuck cruelty.

As I sit here looking up NJ open meeting law because I watched an episode of Bob's Burgers where school board members got together on school business and my brain immediately jumped to "I hope someone put out a public meeting warning", I am reminded that 5 people have told me I have "notary energy"

The woman who raised me was killed when I was 12. It was one of the most painful things I have experienced and the grief is still fresh over 30 years later. The government executing the killer wouldn't have changed any of that. The death penalty should be abolished.

Don't mind me, just getting water for tea out of the bathroom sink because one of my cats is asleep on the floor in front of the kitchen sink and I don't want to wake her up...

One lesson I've learned from the zoom era is that unless I monitor and consciously make a different facial expression, I will look annoyed, not neutral. Permanently annoyed. My wife and I have been together for 19 years and she still can't tell when I'm actually upset or just not monitoring my face.

I did not expect this morning to include a visit from our downstairs neighbor's plumbers to take out the toilet and part of the wall of our only bathroom, but here we are. Happy Monday, everyone. @loveandcrossbones.org and I are having just a great, great time.

If you, like me, have a sore throat that is so bad it's keeping you from eating solid foods, go get a strep test. Seriously. I waited 7 days to find out I had strep and the nurse practitioner at urgent care felt sorry for me because my throat looked so inflamed. Don't wait till an NP pities you!

This is hilarious, tbh. The Third Way folks have clearly never been to a DSA meeting. The "dirt" is that it takes forever to organize anything and half of the electoral committee members don't believe in electoral politics so endorsements take months
The "centrist" think tank Third Way is looking to pay someone between $140,000 and $150,000 to spend their days trying to dig up dirt on DSA members. They're trying to sell this gig as "anti-extremism" work, which I find completely disgusting.

You know, historically it always goes really well for rulers when they intentionally starve their people...

My housing plan for VT is that every house that sells for $750K or more gets a $50K tax that goes into a housing fund. 25% of that fund creates supportive housing and pays support staff livable wage salaries. 25% creates non-congregate homes for folks moving out of homelessness.

Every candidate I know and all of us who work on political campaigns are very, very ready for the primary to be done. We're not even able to take in the realities of what the general will be like. This cycle has been brutal.

I grew up with the saying "red sky at night, sailors' delight/red sky in the morning, sailors take warning" but no one said anything about an unnatural peach colored wildfire haze that looks like it's signaling armageddon. Rude, frankly
