Anne Seymour Damer: public life, private love
Gossip about Anne Damer's sexuality nearly wrecked her relationships and reputation, but in this queer love story, love outlasts scandal.

Does anyone have a good recommendation for a popular/trade biography of Hildegard? I really want something cozy to curl up with, but that won't break my brain with inaccuracies (as a feminist musicologist).

Trying to ground myself in the good things too, and Hildegard is always a good thing.

'those with the most severe and debilitating disabilities would not lose any money.' - I don't know a single severely disabled person - all of whom have reams of medical evidence of impairment and illness - who hasn't had their conditions deliberately downplayed by benefit assessors
Disability doesn’t care how old you are. Specialist food is no cheaper if you’re 19. Employers don’t lose their prejudice if you’re 21.

This is blatant intergenerational inequality from Labour. Younger disabled people of all severities deserve better. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

it's a lovely michaelmas day and you are a horrible goose
Happy Michaelmas! In some parts of Ireland on this day, rent could be paid in geese. If you’re due to pay rent this month, please consider setting a very irritated goose on your landlord in lieu of payment, in the name of upholding important Irish traditions.

Elizabethan playhouses were supplied by a network of tailors, merchants & craftswomen. Their names survive in records, but little is known about their lives.

I’m working on new research that brings the stories of these makers & traders centre stage. Here is the project in biscuit (cookie) form. 🍪

I'm going to tell you a story and then, at the end, I'm going to ask you if anyone happens to have the niche knowledge I need to help...

The story begins, as so many of my stories do, in an ancient church in the middle of a city. But it's not now. And it's not hundreds of years ago. It's the 1960's

Loved seeing this c.1654 painting by Jacobus Vrel known as “The Little Nurse”; Vrel has often been confused with Vermeer, and I thought of John Berger’s words when I saw this very human scene: “What was it that he wanted to say in the stillness of his rooms which the light fills like water a tank?”

Little poll, replies appreciated from UK academics who have teaching responsibilities.

If you were to go on an academic writing retreat in winter/spring, when would be convenient? Reading week overlaps with half term, so not the best time for most? A long weekend? Could you escape during term?
