one thing i have long thought, in this business of Takes, is that there is an enormous necessity to discipline your own thinking. it is *so easy* to get lazy. to just talk shit. to just outsource your brain to your own comments section.

I do think you basically charge a few of them with the cybercrimes they're committing and the "alignment" problem does suddenly start to disappear.

Interesting to note: per this measure, AI usage increased 5 pp from March to September of this year. Projecting out, that means it'll be about another 30 months before most companies use AI (March of 2029)

John C. Calhoun wasn't a conservative; he was a radical. Stephen Miller isn't a conservative; he's a radical. "Tradition" isn't a real thing that once existed and we can go back to, or something worth conserving, but an imaginary place that they'll destroy the current world to create.

There's no forgiving this. No living it down. It's a stain on our humanity. When all this is over, the monsters who did this should be pariahs. And the soulless thugs who cheered it on while dehumanizing Haitian immigrants should be reminded of what they did every day of their lives.
The situation in Haiti is terrifying. On Sunday, 150 gunmen swept down on a town to kill, rape, loot, and burn. 22 people were executed in a churchyard. 52 were taken hostage.

Stephen Miller mockingly says Haiti is safe and ICE just sent its second deportation flight this month; with kids on board.

The US media is bad at covering politics, and seemingly hasn't gotten better over the last few years
Muckrack search, U.S.-based high domain authority news outlets over the past seven days:

Economically speaking, it's actually pretty bad that anyone implies this. People need to be able to rely on Social Security for optimal retirement planning. There should be very little uncertainty about benefit cuts, let alone about it existing at all.
Obviously it's Very Important, but it's always a bit funny that the Bad Scenario we are trying to avoid is a 25% cut in benefits.

Like the discourse very much implies it is going to go away forever.

Underappreciated: US farmland *already substantially produces energy, not food*, and does so very inefficiently. Corn ethanol (~40% of all US corn) requires about 100 times more land per vehicle-mile driven than solar photovoltaics -> electric vehicles. Shifting corn to solar *would free up land*.
anytime people raise concerns about land use for solar projects or anything like that i just want to point out that half the corn we grow in this country gets used to make gasoline slightly worse

but the problem with AI is not that it doesn’t work, it’s that it does. the problem is the political one of deciding what to do with the resources we have. pretending we don’t have the resources is what the right does in order to avoid taking care of people
none of this is meant as an argument that LLMs are not dangerous or destabilizing or whatever. I actually think the stochastic parrot line of critique undermines the claim that they are dangerous. they're much more dangerous if they are reliable!

"it’s not only the fact of cost, it’s the cost stability. It’s the economy stability."
"even if I’m a climate guy, the driver for the transition is no longer climate. It’s the economy."
Today on Volts: in 2008, physics professor Ramón Méndez Galain was made energy minister of Uruguay. Over the next 7 years, he led the country to a 98% carbon-free electricity system. With his nonprofit, Ivy, he's now attempting to export the model to other countries in the global South. We discuss.
He helped Uruguay decarbonize. Can he help other countries do the same?

Had a weird experience with Claude recently where it apparently added me to A/B testing that switched use of the Write and Edit tools with calls to bash scripts in auto mode? This sucked cuz it meant I can't review the changes while they're made. Took me forever to figure out why it was happening

Government statistical agencies have both extensive documentation *and* are very responsive like this!
Fun fact, if you have ever had a question about how CPI is calculated or what categories are tracked or definitions of categories or whatever, you can literally just call them and ask. I did this once, immediately got a person, got transferred to another person, and had my answer in < 2 minutes
This is incorrect.

"Chicken thighs" and "chicken feet" are different items, and CPI hedonic adjustments are only on the *same* type of item.

Mangione is an RFK and Elon Musk fan. It makes perfect sense! His crime was motivated by the same inchoate resentment and conspiracism that leads people towards the reactionary right. The same desire for some unspecified class of villains who can be rightfully subjected to purgative violence.

-the most desperately precarious groups, whose very existences are constantly put at risk by the systems around us, or

-mostly young men, across lines of income, ideology, race, and geography
