i think that part of the problem is that it's hard to tell which American MENA experts are on the Saudi payroll, Israeli payroll, Qatari payroll, or UAE payroll because they're all on every payroll
"IR people writ large" or even "the blob (as originally defined) in general" are painting with too broad a brush here, but it is a completely true statement that anyone who ID's as a MENA specialist has loudly and explicitly been advocating for bombing iran in exactly this fashion for decades

The fantasy: AI becomes sapient, takes over the nukes itself, and wages war against Humanity.

The reality: AI becomes the equivalent of a drunken, street-corner pseudo-prophet that Humanity decides to take seriously for some reason.

Weren't there multiple TOS episodes with similar premises?

yeah i mean there's a lot to disagree with in "they go low we go high" as it turns out, but "tethered to factual reality" really needs to be the touchstone. hannah arendt etc etc
There's a genuinely terrifying attitude (that isn't just isolated to ResistanceSky, but is utterly prevalent amongst them), that the truth doesn't matter. That's it ok to post that fake quote, genAI image etc, because the other side have denigrated & destroyed the truth, and holy shit that's bad.
yanks resistposting about trump's visit to Ireland has opened my eyes as to just how serious a disinformation vector blue sky is

The only responsible attitude for liberals and progressives to align on is that all right-wing grievances, claims and believes are not only false, but malicious lies. Nothing passes the mouth of an American conservative in public life that is not meant to harm and destroy the lives of millions.

In an age of extremism everyone is an extremism scholar
I feel like I’m on fraud watch as an international relations scholar because I honestly kinda don’t fucking know why this country does anything anymore. If you held a gun to my head and demanded to know why we’re at war with Iran or feuding with Canada or want Greenland, I’d say the Lord’s Prayer.

Does no one else find this an unforgivably stupid question?

Emissions reductions won't make a heat wave NOW survivable.

Likewise, more homes can have AC, heat pumps while overall cutting greenhouse emissions. This isn't an "either/or", both are needed.

The “you just don’t like AI because you don’t understand it” argument is completely demolished whenever I post about this nuance because everyone resoundingly agrees and supports this version. People understand AI. They understand what they don’t like about it. They are not ignorant.
(AI actually has been used in science and medicine for decades and is incredibly good at doing things like finding cancer that can’t be seen with the human eye but that is a completely different type of AI then we’re all angry about it and we shouldn’t discuss them in the same conversations TBH)
Talk to the people who would use this for dream use cases — the cancer scientists, the people who want to make material goods out of it — and they will tell you it’s either a marginally useful if unreliable trick or completely useless. It has produced 0% of the utopian products promised.
