We’ll talk Orioles, have some giveaways, and maybe even special guests. And then we’ll hang out and watch O’s-Twins at 1:30!
First assignment:

look into this new emerging technology called sunglasses
Another change coming to the Orioles front office, as @Britt_Ghiroli first reported.

Sig Mejdal is changing his role away from oversight of the analytics to oversee emerging technologies and innovative practices in Baltimore's front office, source confirmed

Someone please wake me up from this nightmare
Craig Albernaz on why Samuel Basallo attempted to bunt with two on and no outs in the seventh, and why the Orioles didn't bunt to begin the 10th with the automatic runner on second and trailing by one:

Rece Hinds up and starting, carrying an extra hitter, Nunez on the taxi sqaud.

Luis Robert Jr is almost certainly hurt.
It’s interesting Luis Robert Jr. is not playing today against a lefty
September 6, 2026 at 3:18 PM
Carlos Narvaez is hitting .088 with the Orioles.

Orioles PITCHERS hit .135 in the Buck Showalter era.

Craig after the game:

“I never said that”
Before the game, Craig Albernaz said of Luis De León: "We’re not going to ambush him and throw him in the fire right away."

Well, De León entered in the seventh inning of a 2-2 game between the Rockies and Orioles. Maybe not the fire, but at least hot.

And he gives up a two-run homer
September 2, 2026 at 3:08 AM
Unfortunately he is now claiming that he never said anything about Christian Franklin and is asking to stop putting words in his mouth.
Craig Albernaz was effusive in his praise of rookie outfielder Christian Franklin.

"It’s a lot of things that we love and value in a player, so we’re excited to have Christian and I’m really excited to see his development, because I think there’s a real player in there.”

Craig Albernaz has struggled with the hard parts of the job (in-game decisions), and maybe that's expected from a first-year manager.

But he has also completely flubbed the easy parts of the job (speaking to the media, supporting his players).

It's rare to see a manager this bad at communication.

3-way tie for the final AL WC spot. Orioles, Tigers, Rangers all 61-64.

But if the season ended today, the Orioles would go to the postseason.

All 3 teams are 6-6 against each other, so the next tiebreaker is intra-division record.

The Orioles’ 15-18 record vs the AL East is the best of the 3.

The AL Slop at its finest
August 16, 2026 at 1:24 AM
So the Orioles decided to trade Adley Rutschman, turn into full sellers, and punt on 2026 too. Great!

Let's chat about it:

If Mike Elias attempts to show his face at Oriole Park it's on site
The Orioles are trading catcher Adley Rutschman to the Boston Red Sox, source confirmed, and as @JeffPassan reported.

Baltimore's franchise cornerstone, whom Mike Elias drafted first overall in 2019, heads to an American League East foe.

This will be thread of deals that don't involve the Orioles, but include players the Orioles may have pursued.

And I will give you my take on the comparable trade package the Orioles would have had to give up to get said player.

Thinking about doing a deep dive here on the tools of the O’s draft picks.

The overarching theme is: it’s hard to draft guys who are really good on offense AND defense. Those are star-level players. That‘s Adley and Gunnar.
I'm sure some of the Orioles' defensive issues could be improved through better preparation/coaching/practice.

But a big part of the problem is that they just don't have a lot of good defenders. The players they've developed and acquired tend to skew toward a bat-first profile.

Gonna thread some significant year-over-year changes we saw from some Orioles in April.

Starting with Ryan Helsley, who saw his Pull Air% allowed drop from 20.9% last year to 4.2% this year.

16.7% decrease is largest in MLB.

That’s how he’s been able to allow hard contact but get away with it.

Pete Alonso is 8th in MLB in average exit velocity (95.1 mph) and 9th in Hard Hit rate (60.6%).

His OPS will not be under .600 (or .700 or .800) for very long.

As of Gunnar's latest at-bat, pitchers appear to be attacking him with much more off-speed/breaking balls this year. Over 105 pitches:

He's seeing only 23.8% FB, down significantly from previous yrs (45.9% to 48.5% range)

Low sample size but something to watch

Currently questioning everything I thought I knew about options and roster rules in the CBA
Maybe they’re going to do a bullpen game with Suarez going bulk? Maybe I’m missing something? Weird.
April 1, 2026 at 2:38 PM
This likely means Dean Kremer will not immediately take Eflin’s rotation spot, and Albert Suarez will have to start a game this weekend or Monday.

Not sure I get that one.
Roster move is official: Orioles RHP Zach Eflin goes on the 15-day IL with right elbow discomfort and RHP Albert Suárez’s contract is selected from Triple-A Norfolk.

INF Jordan Westburg (partial right UCL tear) transferred to 60-day IL to make room for Suárez on 40-man roster.

Come celebrate Shane Baz day with us at Checkerspot!
Happy Shane Baz day to all who celebrate.
March 29, 2026 at 12:36 PM
Three things to watch today:

1. Orioles slugged .581 on high-ride 4SFBs up in the zone last year (2nd in MLB). That's where Taj Bradley likes to pitch.

2. Jeremiah Jackson makes his first MLB start at 2B.

3. Dylan Beavers in the lineup. Will Albernaz pull him vs a LHP late in the game?

The Orioles bullpen definitely still has questions, but I think it's a really good sign that they just took the guys with the best stuff and highest upside (Hiraldo and Nunez) over the guys who had less roster flexibility (Suarez and Kowar).
