I’ve been keeping a list of Trump II admin actions on a blog and decided to give it its own home: Civicslog.com. The list goes back to the election and I’ll port those items over several at a time while trying to keep up with the daily flood.

President Humpty Dumpty issues a decree.
United States President Donald Trump issues executive order instructing federal government agencies to "use the terms 'Super Intelligence' and 'SI' in place of 'Artificial Intelligence' and 'AI' and will not acknowledge the usage of 'Artificial Intelligence' and 'AI' in any applicable setting."
Inaugurating The Era Of Super Intelligence
By the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, it is hereby ordered: Section 1. Every child deserves a safe and nurturing home where they ...

Hey @governor.ca.gov: Any plans to sign the “Balcony Solar” bill (SB 868) into law before the 9/30 deadline? It’s been on your desk for weeks. CA renters should have an opportunity to cut ⚡️costs, reduce carbon emissions, and help the grid during peak usage.

What’s the holdup?

Seems like the National Weather Service’s Area Forecast Discussion has gotten sloppy and less informative over the past several months. More typos. Less meteorologist’s reasoning behind the forecast. The AFD is a valuable resource and it’d be a real loss if it were to go away. @nws.noaa.gov

Somehow singular “they” snuck up and lodged itself in the part of brain that says ”this sounds right.” Now whenever generic “he” turns up in older texts I give it a sidelong glance. It sounds anachronistic, but more, it sounds off, and the colonization of my ear is complete.

AI Force? An AI Tsar? I thought they had given that job to a tech-bro?

(Asks chat.)

They did: David Sacks was the Special Advisor for AI and Crypto Tsar. But it was a limited-time appointment, so when his term ended, he joined the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology.

The talk about ai-authored human extinction seems premature. Surely the machines will need some of us to stoke the fires, for a while. And those people will need homes and food and all the rest, produced by other humans.

We might call the transition to machine-servitude “the latest capitalism”.

The nesting dependent clauses stuffed into this sentence leave us waiting all afternoon for the speaker to announce his point.

No wonder the cook quit.
This day our cook maid (we having no luck in maids now-adays), which was likely to prove a good servant, though none of the best cooks, fell sick and is gone to her friends, having been with us but 4 days.

If the $5k is coming out of his pocket, then yeah. It won’t change my vote, but thumbs up, sure, good plan.

Sea cucumber fisherman.
Happy labor day (USA). What's one of the oddest paid job you've had? Mine was probably as a reader for a medical professor at Rutgers, whose eyes were failing. I read him many academic texts, as well as Samuel Butler's "The Way of All Flesh."

This leaves the current broken system in place, which means ultimately the utilities and ratepayers will be forced to cover wildfire costs. Here’s an idea: The state should take the IOUs public. But not until the ongoing lack of resolution drives the share price closer to $0.
Wildfire liability bill dies without a vote on final day of session
The measure, which was opposed by Gov. Gavin Newsom and the state's public utiliites, never came to a vote in the Assembly.

Last week the music streaming algorithm found a reason to throw in the Hoodoo Gurus song “Bittersweet” and it’s been an ear worm trapped in my noggin ever since. So here you go: www.youtube.com/watch?v=srrq...

I’ve been bugged by the transformation of the term “late-stage capitalism” which first described a system in its final throes, its contradictions irresolvable, into today’s meaning, nearly the opposite, that describes a capitalism ever more pernicious in its ability to find resources to exploit.

I’m no @tamslick.bsky.social but here are a couple of automotive curiosities from the morning walk: a semi-restored early 60s Chevy Nova. (I drove a Nova wagon of this vintage, for a time, in a teal that matches this car’s primer.)

Same, Sam, except it’s F1 and a Scot droning on about tire selection.
To church, and slept all the sermon, the Scot, to whose voice I am not to be reconciled, preaching.
