I think I had originally posted this on Twitter in 2021 because the frost on the bronze statue looked like a good way to explain highlighting minis.

Reminds me of an episode of TNG that opens with Data reciting a play in "realistic" lighting and it's so dark you almost can't see him from the fire light and Picard has to explain that the audience needs to be able to SEE the play.

Minor crash out over dorks who fail media literacy so badly they can't even accept the very basic concept that the person writing the thing sets the genre they're writing in and the reader is the one who uses that to both understand the work more deeply *and* see how well that genre was executed.

I never wanted to be a "in my day things were better" old lady... but I need to categorically state that technology actually WAS better.

You are currently in the peak of designed obsolence, enshittification, personal intrusion and forced acceptance by lack of choice.

Sure, the underlying tech...

I work at a public library. People who want to use AI seem to have no trouble doing so. People who don't want to use AI have a harder time. I crowdsourced and then finalized this document "How to disable or avoid intrusive AI" and then gave it a short URL: notoai.org Please pass along if it's useful

The point isn't to produce essays, it's to teach students how to think for fuck's sake. The minute you automate that, it's over. You might as well close the course. Which they're also doing. This is an attack on learning, and everyone is just shrugging.

Sadly it's not just #JodrellBank losing funding, with deep cuts across the board for UK astronomy. One example is the HiPERCAM project whose funding has been entirely cut to save £50K/yr - peanut-levels of £s. Spectacular fast transient science lost, for what? 🔭😡

Cringe is the death of the self. Free yourself from cringe and let yourself have a good time dping whatever weird or silly little thing you want (as long as it doesn't hurt or violate the consent of others).
Those who are 35+, what advice do you have for people just entering their 30s?
