In today's @theguardian.com, an article about the #Voynich work Colin Layfield and I have been doing: www.theguardian.com/culture/2026...
A medieval manuscript has confounded scholars for centuries. Have they been reading it wrong all this time?
Researchers argue incorrect binding of Voynich manuscript radically changes ideas about its drawings and indecipherable text

Rapist lives don't matter ❤️
every last high school girl out there, unless you know for a fact that she has committed murder or rape, will do more good for the world than a boy or man who has committed sexual assault

stop treating rapists as valuable

What should you do if you pull up on a car crash before emergency services arrive?

Let me walk you through what I did yesterday while driving with the family to the grocery store. Traffic backed up ahead of us and around a corner someone rear ended another car, there was airbag deployment.

“So far, all scientists can say is that L. tilcayo lives in Bolivia’s Yungas forest ecoregion, which lies on the eastern slope of the Andes Mountains. But as to what these cats eat or get eaten by, how they reproduce, and many other facets of their day-to-day lives, much mystery remains.”

Public anger comes for John Roberts

The chief justice’s summer retreat in Maine used to be one of boating, potluck dinners, touch football and easy friendships. Locals called him “John.”

Now a swirl of anger has been rising at him, transforming his getaways. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/01/u...

After decades of potlucks and paddle-boarding on Maine’s midcoast, rising anger and protests have left the Supreme Court’s chief justice more isolated than ever.

this is good, and there should be a lot more of this tbh. not just directed at the justices either. noah feldman should get a version of this for all the fucking pr he does for the conservative justices, eg. to say nothing of the more actively evil law profs and lower court judges and lawyers

It's not a very charitable opinion, but these people should be scared. Not of violence, but of social rejection. Shame evolved as a method of encouraging and enforcing pro-social behavior. It *has* a place in society. Even the most ghoulish among them wants to be liked.

I am told Maeve is now available for adoption. Going to try to take her out for a field trip this week & provide additional adorable photos.
This is Maeve. She may be the sweetest, most good natured, most trusting dog I have ever met. She was abandoned in DC last week, and since I’m not able to adopt a dog now, I had to turn her over to the Brandywine Animal Shelter. I want to make sure this absolute delight of a dog finds a good home.

No one should be surprised that OpenAI — a company that built their systems on stolen work — would steal the work of researchers and try to take credit for it.

The best use case I can conceive for AI would be making a mod for a thing in a game I—and nobody else—find annoying, and as far as use cases go, it's, ah, pretty thin
I participated in some public library ai courses. I’m telling you that the state of literacies and the complexity of lives deeply enmeshed in the bowels of late stage capitalism cannot find a use case for an agent & if they could, people don’t have the scaffolding to imagine one that could be useful

Here’s the most incredible story you’ll read today.

A small plane with four people aboard crashes in a field.

Another pilot witnesses it. That pilot happens to be flying a bunch of skydivers. They offer to jump to assist, are given permission.

The skydivers happen to be EMTs. Everyone survives.

Four people were aboard the single-engine plane when it went down in a cornfield near Carvers School Road in East Troy at about 1:30 p.m.

I've been reading the comments (I know, big mistake) and somebody smarter than me should really write about unprocessed COVID trauma and resultant agoraphobia/general terror of normal human contact
One of the reasons I think this went viral even in queer circles is because everyone has seen this dynamic play out in some form in our spaces. We need a better way to root out toxic people utilizing the language of liberation in narcissistic and sociopathic ways to dominate spaces.
hilarious and insane article. full of the sorts of people you meet all the time in left activism, who combine neuroticism and narcissism to bring down any institution they're allowed into.
