Friday Fun Facts: Wave dynamics.

The height of a wave as it crashes on shore is directly proportional to water depth at that location.

For every 1 ft of wave above water, there is 1.3 ft below water.
So big waves crashing on shore means deep water, small waves - shallow water. Plan Accordingly.

Autumn at the beach.
There may not be leaves falling, but different seasons offer different conditions at the beach. A calm summer swimming beach can turn into massive waves for professional surfers in the winter.

Check flags and signs before getting in water - feet first!

Respect the signs.
Not every day is a beach swim day.
Red flags means it's a beach walking day.

This kills more people annually than sharks: Rip currents!

The best way to survive a rip current is to avoid one to begin with, look for water discoloration or waves that meet on shore before heading out for more.

Heads up, beach lovers!

Rip currents are often right where two crashing waves meet, creating a fast-moving “river” of water heading away from the shore.

This photo captures a brief moment, but life doesn't pause, it keeps moving. Observe the water before getting in.

Water safety begins on land☀️

We believe safety is a shared responsibility.

When neighbors, schools and families learn together, confidence grows before anyone even steps into the water.

Join our community-backed programs that make water safety accessible, practical and rooted in local trust.

Tides change suddenly.
Observe water before getting in.
And always enter water feet first.
Water safety begins on land.

You're never to old (or young) to save a life.

Yesterday a 55 year old lifeguard saved 4 British tourists on Fuerteventura (Canary Islands, Spain - off the coast of Africa)
He managed to keep all four afloat until more rescue personnel arrived on jet skis.

Lifeguards make sure that everyone that goes in the water comes back out. The job is demanding because globally only 45% of adults can swim without assistance.

Learning to swim is a true life skill: formal lessons can cut drowning risk by up to 88% for young children.
