Cars! Safety, reliability, efficiency, all significantly better for the average car now compared to the 80s. Modern trucks, on the other hand, are much less safe for everyone outside of them.
Food, man. Food is so much better than it was in 1986. All of it. Poor-people food, restaurant food, fresh food, frozen food. Food is just a hell of a lot better.

The point is most adults in the US have been guilty of the level of assault Platner is. Either its acceptable when its a child or most parents are irredeemably abusive according to the standard people are holding him to.
