I write about movies. Sometimes I talk about them. Usually just write. Award-winning screenwriter for what it's worth. Film instructor at the University of Colorado, Denver, but ridiculous social media presence definitely my own. http://walterchaw.com
Showing my students THE KILLER (1989) tonight. Hadn't marked it before, but the visual connection to MANHUNTER (1986) seems obvious now. What a gorgeous film.

Thinking about the free outdoor screening of 2001 at Telluride this year that was so loud it received noise complaints and could be heard all the way across town. As it should be.

Tried something new today: I bought comp books & pens for all my students in my upper div. class. I gave them 15min after each film to just journal about what they saw - it didn't necessarily have to be about the film so long as it addressed memories/emotions evoked by the film. No phones. Physical.

Showing my intro class "It's a Good Life" today so they can see how we talk about fascism without talking about it.

I hear from festivals sometimes about how they're remaining agnostic about AI, wanting to explore both sides and potential uses for a world-destroying, thieving LLM and fuck you. Fuck. You.

I went in expecting a Leon Helm biopic. Came out having watched this kickass, righteous throwback BOXCAR BERTHA/THIEVES LIKE US backwoods actioner.
Starring Ethan Hawke and Russell Crowe, THE WEIGHT opens in theaters this week. It was one of the best films at both Sundance and Berlin this year. I wish there was more hoopla around it. Please see it. I don't think you'll be disappointed. www.vulture.com/article/the-...
We Don’t Get Movies Like The Weight Much Anymore
Think of this atmospheric, exciting survival thriller as The Wages of Fear (or Sorcerer, if you prefer) but on foot.

I remember when I was a kid how Ken Branagh was essentially the pre-eminent Shakespearian. I learned so much from his adaptations. HENRY V was galvanizing. Anyway, just watched MAYDAY and I didn't hate it in a SPIES LIKE US kind of late-80s desperate, high-concept Glasnost buddy comedy kind of way.
