Writing the Grit of Cancer

As you would expect, people who write for a living are going to write about their cancer. I want to read about the grit of living with cancer, the days of struggle, and the warm rush of hope when a treatment starts working.

Polite Doesn’t Butter My Muffin

After you have cancer, it’s a daily dilemma about how honest to be when people ask how you’re doing. Saying “I’m fine” shares nothing of value. Being polite doesn't get you a long, warm hug. #Cancer #politeness #honesty

Lyrical Prostate

Body Beautiful is a collection of poems by Ifor Thomas, a Welsh poet. What makes this book special is that a man actually took the time to write about his prostate cancer, he writes about it well, and it’s humorous at times. markliebenow.substack.com/p/lyrical-pr...

Cafés, Cancer Writing, and Humor

Cafés are therapeutic. Good coffee, bakery items, and a place away where you can imagine a life beyond cancer. Instead of feeling cooped up at home, you’re among people, so you feel connected to the flow of everyday life.

Cancer Is Not My Warp or Weft

Sarah is not her cancer. Cancer is not the warp and weft of her being. Cancer is woven into only part of her life. Cancer is something that happens to you. It’s not something you are, and it’s not the work you choose to do.

Sandra Steingraber documents the cancer-causing chemicals in the air, water, and land. 80-90% of cancers are instigated by environmental carcinogens, occupational risk factors, and lifestyle choices. #environmentalcancer

The Compassion of Caregivers

Besides memoirs written by those who have cancer, there are books written by those who take care of those with cancer — the spouses, families, and friends. Bearing witness to the suffering of others takes its own courage.

Gleason 6 Prostate Cancer

A Gleason 6 indicates your cancer has a low risk of spreading, and the standard approach is to go on active surveillance. Undergoing treatments now to “cure” your cancer could be detrimental to your health.

John Updike, lung cancer

John Updike knew he had cancer for only one month before he died. I found half a dozen poems in his last poetry book, Endpoint and Other Poems (2009). That’s a small amount of material to form any conclusions.

AM I MY BMI?

I have a love/hate relationship with the BMI. Is “hate” too strong a word? There is no love. At every meeting with my oncologist, the notice flashes on the screen – “You’re still overweight, Bozo!”

Inspiration is a bird feeder. Every day we have to fill it up for it to be helpful. Having cancer is hard. We can use a spark of something to liven up our day. We can also be a bird feeder and share our seeds of inspiration with others.

If you’re seeing a primary doctor for the first time, and they don’t let you tell your story about what’s wrong, find a new doctor. The patient-doctor connection needs to be a relationship, not a transaction. Dr. Rita Charon

For some people, the death of a loved one from cancer is so traumatic that they never want to go through that again. They put a protective barrier around themselves to prevent new pain, but this barrier also prevents others from helping them.
