Surviving fascism depends on effective resistance. But can civilians defeat fascists armed with anything from drones to nukes? The answer is yes. This growing collection of threads explains what you can do, based on a decade of research. If you doubt that all this is necessary read the thread below:
🧵A thread to help Americans understand what they are up against. I'm an American citizen who grew up in GA as a person with dark skin, and who has lived in Europe for some time. Anglo-Saxon white supremacy and European-style fascism share a common history. But I have also observed key differences:
The Anglo-Saxon white supremacy Americans are familiar with has merged with Continental-European fascism. This takes any traditional American resistance strategies out of the picture. Passive damage mitigation, protests, political organizing, hoping to just ride it out, will not work. 1/

That may be a solution for elderly and disabled people, and children. Able people, from all groups targeted by the fascists, need to stay and start resisting. We know from history that exile from fascism only works temporarily and only if you have an army fighting and defeating the fascists for you.
With Europe and South America being taken over by far right authoritarian parties and China cracking down in its own LGBTQ population, we need to figure out an international response in how to get LGBTQ people to safety. It's going to get so bad while every potential safe harbor is taken away.

It's not actually rocket science. Fascism is the presence of fascists and the absence of anti-fascists. As long as people refuse to be the latter and reject any method that's ever been effective against fascism because it involves fighting, breaking the rules, taking risks, fascism will win.
bleak future ahead for brazil. something must be done with the growing global fascistic movement if we want any future worth anything

I suspect this has a lot to do with American meddling, and it would be our job to stop this. But when there are fascists to fight, we'll suddenly feign helplessness and pretend to oppose any kind of rule-breaking. So we just keep exporting our fascism to the rest of the world.
It's only the first round but I can't believe Brazil did everything right going after Jair Bolsanaro over his attempted coup only to be on the verge of electing his corrupt dipshit son.

There is no such thing as a synthetic AI focus group, just a machine that tells you what you want to hear
I hosted an in-conversation with AI minister Kanishka Narayan at Labour conference

We covered a lot of ground...

He said there was too much AI “doomerism” in Westminster

And revealed he has used synthetic AI focus groups to gauge public opinion on a range of topics

I would find it much more interesting to name all the women who won Nobel prizes for men.
I can start with Franklin and Meitner, anyone wants to go on?
Can you name the women who have won a science Nobel prize? Take Nature’s quiz on female Nobel laureates in physics, chemistry or physiology or medicine. www.nature.com/articles/d41...

I have never heard of any newsrooms with alarming practices like those described in this thread. If you have, I’d like to hear from you. Contact in bio.
Earlier this week, I agreed to interviews with two USA Today journalists. They wrote fantastic articles about the Cornell case that I'm proud to have been a part of.

What I did not know is that their employer considers interviews to proprietary and opens up recordings to be used by any journalist.

The elitism and entitlement and white supremacy - not just Orr who thinks he can get away with it, but Cambridge Heads and so-called leaders who think they can get away with turning a blind eye.

It is not only cambridge but elitism is such a brain-rotting aspect of all this. I'm so sick of it

This is the kind of white guy who needs one of those brown / black people who’ll be his mate and say “yeah, you’re right, racism isn’t that big a deal”. Plenty of them in politics apparently.
Just had a very distressing conversation with a former policeman, dad to mixed race kids, who complained about having “DEI shoved down my throat“ and I should really trust my instincts about these guys. Horrifying meeting IRL the kind of privileged white guy who thinks he’s the victim these days

Incredibly proud of my youngest brother who exemplifies what people living with disabilities can accomplish with appropriate support. He’s been very lucky and I wish we could make sure all people got what they need to flourish. Here he is talking about his hobby as a DJ

Sharing music through being a DJ brings people together, allows me to enjoy myself and recharge, and gives me a break from the serious demands of work

I wrote a thread earlier today (before even reading this story, actually) about how commonly the “inconsistencies” in a victim’s story are actually procedural distortions made by people in positions of power who are invested in disbelieving her:
All of this. I also want to add that, in my research, I found that a lot of “inconsistencies” in a victim’s story actually came from gender bias affecting investigators’ record keeping and interview methods.
Just a reminder that people don’t always realize they were raped in the immediate aftermath. It can take hours, days, months, and even years to realize you were raped, and it doesn’t make it any less true. There are many kinds of responses, including fawning and trying to appease your rapist

Every single newspaper that reported that Jane Doe “changed her story” should be rushing to publish retractions right now.

This case should be a lesson in taking a DA’s victim-blaming statements at face value. Victims do not report to the police because they thought nothing happened to them.

Moreover, ICE must be destroyed

The Salem Witch Trials are a pretty compelling example of why we shouldn’t let religious superstition override evidence and reason.

So perhaps we can understand why a pastor might not want students learning about them.
A Christian pastor on a New York public school board voted against approving a senior class trip to Boston that included a stop at the Salem Witch Museum.

He called it "Satanic."

Then he admitted: “I can’t really say that I know the history of it.”

A woman was drugged, raped, and sexually trafficked to members of a fraternity.

Two of the men involved were expelled. Five were given the opportunity to mitigate suspension by *writing an essay.*

The dozens of other men who knew this was happening and said nothing? You already know the answer.

It’s so triggering (and I don’t use that word lightly) to be repeatedly ignored, dismissed, patronised and lied to by politicians and policy makers because it reflects how Alice and I were treated when she needed help and answers whilst she was alive. Trans people are enduring state sanctioned abuse

I think I can speak for most trans people and their families when I say, they don’t and increasingly they aren’t, precisely because of Labour’s decisions.

How can they believe this stuff they type?

These prevention campaigns can have a really negative impact on those left behind. And they detract from the real systemic issues that need addressing that we know protect against suicide: equal access to healthcare, housing, employment, food, warmth and justice for all of us.

Every liberal or so called progressive politician attacking trans people is doing so because they want to. Not because it's popular. Not because it wins elections. Not even because it's a big issue facing cis women in sports.

They're choosing to do it because they're bigots
I just honestly can't get over that Save Women Sports, an anti-trans group could only find five trans athletes competing K through 12.

Five. The NCAA president testified a year and a half ago or so that there were less than 10 college level trans athletes. What the fuck are we doing, people
