A panel of more than 30 researchers from around the world came together this year to finally define what stuttering is and how best to treat it. These meetings resulted in the first consensus medical guidelines on stuttering. But the best new strategies for treatment are still up for debate.

New in #JNeurosci: After stroke, uninjured areas of the brain can age faster than expected, relating to the severity of their language difficulties. These brain aging patterns can predict how well patients respond to treatment & regain language ability.

Biomedical scientists - a reminder that NIH proposes to "improve" peer review by hiding impact scores from Program Officers and applicants, and binning applications into broad categories of "Most competitive,""Competitive," or "Not discussed." Please provide feedback before the October 13 deadline!

NIH's Aug 2026 proposal would scrap exact scores and percentiles for three broad bins (top = top 25%). With funding rates at 5% or lower, too much then rides on administrative discretion. It devalues peer review and is a deterrent to engage. Tell NIH before Oct 13.

A great explainer about a proposal to hide NIH peer review scores from applicants and program officers, why NIH’s justification makes no sense, why it could lead to (further) politicization of science, and how to leave a public comment
