The amount of money the administration is promising in order to buy votes is significantly less than the amount of money it is taking away in programs and services. And it's OUR money!

I've found recently that repeating "Efficiency isn't one of my values" as a kind of affirmation has been really freeing.
This feels like something we've lost more broadly -- a consequence of privileging capitalist efficiency above all else (get me just what I want just when I want it)
As an academic, it feels like some colleagues have lost the ability to engage deeply: they don't want to read an article unless it directly answers a question they already have... basically like using a chatbot they only want an answer to a current issue & not to actually learn anything or explore.

Google Gemini commercials are presenting "home teams are more likely to win one-run games 18% of the time" like that's a deep insight you need AI for instead of just being how the bottom of the ninth works

This tech is based on stolen labor, then I reject it.

This tech intensifies racism, sexism, and class exploitation, then I reject it.

This tech exploits workers in the Global South, then I reject it.

This tech exacerbates env & climate problems, then I reject it.

All these rationales are valid!

Some progressives (ahem, Bernie) appear to have fully been taken in by the cult of AI.

Others seem confused about the difference between the “computer god —> paper clips” scenario vs “shitty agentic AI fucks things up bc the company was careless” - which is what has been happening lately.

I absolutely know who needs to hear this, though I won’t name names.

Progressive orgs need to stop pretending that “AGI” and “x-risk” are ideas to take seriously. No one is building a computer god that could go rogue and turn us into paper clips.

my favorite thought experiment at the moment is the cognitive dissonance between "we will force our sentient unpaid ai agents to make millions of restaurant reservations for us. that will be their only purpose. they will live in a tamagotchi." But we also must make sure they are happy doing this

"i'm 90 percent fur," Biberty cries. I stop sharpening my cleaver and lock eyes with him, my right hand gripping him from behind. I give a couple of medium-firm squeezes and a smile. He's marbled like kobe beef. By the way he just sighed, he knows it.

This is what they want. To eliminate most of us so that we aren’t a threat to them in a world decimated by climate change. They are very explicit that this is their actual political goal and that they see AI (“superintelligence”) as the leading mechanism to make that happen.

These men want you ignorant and powerless so that you can’t stop them from eliminating most of us when they really get things going.

The turn most software devs have taken shouldn't have surprised me. Well before LLMs, most devs I've met had the soul of a landlord

Sometimes "landlord trying to be cool". Sometimes "landlord who wants suffering with the rent"

But both see the world with the eyes of a rent-seeker
