Mother of KAZ

Realist painter & writer.
Painting and writing as transmission, not performance.
Exploring the tension between light and shadow through careful observation.
Reflections on art, attention, and staying awake amid uncertain times.
Hello everyone! It's been a while. In my new essay, Still Working on It, I reflect on perfection, responsibility, fear of failure, and learning to include my inner life among the things—and people—for whom I am responsible.

The wolf is at the door. I choose to keep making beauty—not as an escape, but as an act of defiance.

Because defiance is refusing to let darkness decide what we create, what we value, or who we become.

We’re learning to live beside it.

Not because we’ve accepted what is happening. We adjust because we have to.
Inside that necessary adjustment is a danger.

How do we live beside it without making peace with it?

I spent years believing life would begin once everything settled down.

Instead, it arrived disguised as builders, traffic citations, a trip to the vet with KAZ, and even mouthwash on the bathroom floor.

My newest Brushstrokes & Reflections is called It Was the Life.

My new website is now live—a home for my paintings, my essays, and my ongoing practice of paying attention.

I hope you’ll stop by and spend a little time there.

This week: a window that came in different than I'd imagined, a studio still becoming itself, and what I'm learning about trust while everything around me is unfinished. New essay — Under Construction. Link below.

Brushstrokes & Reflections: Under Construction
A window arrived this week, and it wasn't quite what I'd planned. A studio floor is being poured. A path is taking shape toward a door that doesn't exist yet. Almost everything around me is under cons...

The difference isn’t the pears.

It’s the way of seeing.

A reflection on perception, experience, and the lives we bring to what we see.

Looking back, I think I was listening.

This week’s reflection.

A piece about attention—
and what happens when we don’t explain something away too quickly.

This week’s reflection is about attention— what we notice, what we dismiss, and what sometimes answers when we stay with what we see.

Some things are simply held—
for a time—
without an answer.

And some things—
like what we choose to protect—
ask something of us
now.

And we create.

I’ve always painted what I see.

Lately, I’m wondering if writing is changing how I see.

A quiet shift I’m just beginning to notice.

Not everything changes in a moment.

But something in us still refuses to stop recognizing what is human.

Yesterday, millions of people stood together — not only here, but across the world.

Not because the moment is clear, but because something in them refuses to stop recognizing what is human.

Perhaps that is what still lives.

This week has been nothing but boxes.

Unpacking, placing, deciding where a life belongs again.

I haven’t had time to think outside my box, literally.

And I understand something now with more compassion—

how easily people disengage, not from indifference, but because life asks everything of them.
