this is an overarching problem across men's sports, and has real societal impacts. binaries are all that are allowed in mainstream discussion, so scandal and even criminal behaviors are whittled down into narratives of overcoming, no matter how heinous the details or thorough the evidence.

it's very funny (read: stupid) to frame manchester city dismantling a rival as defiance or overcoming adversity when their ability to win a lot with squads that were constructed illegally is kinda the whole point of the scandal
