The final post in this saga is happily a positive one. We are healing up! Scabbed over for a second round(someone was naughty & chewed the first one off one night) & of course, recieving plenty of healin' belly rubs. May all who helped make this happen live prosperous, peaceful lives.

The AME Sunday School Connection awarded Vaughan a full-tuition academic scholarship, a rare opportunity for African American women at the time. She attended Wilberforce University in Ohio, a historically Black university, where she majored in mathematics. She graduated cum laude in 1929. /3
Wilberforce University in Wilberforce, Ohio. It was the first private, Historical Black College and University in the U.S., and one of only three HBCUs established before the Civil War. Wilberforce maintained a rigorous and standard-setting mathematics program during the early 20th century. Its high academic caliber was anchored by Dudley Weldon Woodard, a legendary mathematician who served as the department chair. Woodard established an active campus Research Club designed to raise intellectual standards and stimulate original mathematical work among faculty and students alike. The rigor of the program is best highlighted by the success of its alumni. Graduating from Wilberforce with a math degree provided the foundational training needed to break into highly complex fields, enabling Dorothy Vaughan to pivot into advanced engineering calculations, complex algebraic fluid dynamics and eventual computer programming for NASA.

Vaughan’s professors encouraged her to pursue a master’s degree at Howard University. However, the Great Depression hit after her graduation, and she put her studies on hold to help support her family. She spent the next 14 years teaching math at Robert Russa Moton High School in Farmville, Va. /4
Dorothy Vaughan, ca. 1930s. Vaughan’s 14-year career as a high school mathematics teacher was the crucible that refined her skills as an educator, a leader and a master communicator of complex mathematics. Moton High School was an all-Black, segregated school. Under Virginia’s Jim Crow laws, Black schools received drastically less funding than white schools. Vaughan had to teach with outdated textbooks, fewer classroom supplies and significantly lower pay than her white counterparts. Teaching high school math kept Vaughan’s mathematical mind sharp and gave her the ability to break down dense mathematical concepts into easily digestible lessons. The ability to patience-test formulas and explain complex logic to beginners mirrored the skills she would need when she was promoted to Supervisor of the West Area Computers and when she later had to teach her staff FORTRAN programming.

In 1949, the white woman who previously managed the West Area Computers unit passed away. NACA officials needed someone to step in immediately to keep the department running efficiently. They appointed Vaughan as the Acting Head of the unit. This made her the agency’s first Black supervisor. /6

Despite doing the same work as white female mathematicians, Vaughan and her colleagues were forced to work in a separate facility, eat at separate cafeteria tables, and use segregated restrooms. Isolated by segregation, they relied on one another to navigate both a hostile world and an incredibly demanding workplace. Because public transit was segregated and often inefficient, they formed tight carpools. Rather than competing against each other in a scarce job market, they pulled each other up. Dorothy Vaughan set the tone for this culture, acting as a protector and mentor. Outside of Langley, their lives were deeply intertwined. They attended the same churches and organized local fundraisers. They celebrated promotions together and supported one another through family tragedies, illnesses and childbirth.

However, it took two years for management to confirm Vaughan’s title. She had to advocate for herself against institutional biases and ensure that her unit delivered flawless results. In January 1951, NACA stripped the “acting” modifier from her title, officially promoting her to Section Head. /7
Dorothy Vaughan, ca. late 1950s. As Section Head of the West Area Computers, Vaughan held a position of rare visibility at the Langley Research Center. Aerospace engineers did not typically do their own data crunching. They submitted raw figures to the computing pools. Vaughan evaluated incoming research projects and assigned the right mathematicians to specific engineering groups. Langley’s top engineers often went to Vaughan asking for the best “girls” for high-priority or difficult research units. If an assignment was exceptionally complex, engineers often bypassed the pool and requested that Vaughan handle the calculations. Vaughan also used her management position as a shield and a ladder for other women, helping to secure promotions and pay raises. Her advocacy wasn’t limited by race. Vaughan recognized that electronic computers were the future, but NASA’s initial training for the IBM 704 was limited. Vaughan took matters into her own hands. She taught herself the FORTRAN programming language in the early 1960s, then taught her staff to ensure that they didn’t lose their jobs. /8
The first launch of the Scout B, 1965. The Scout Launch Vehicle Program was a low-cost, highly reliable Scout four-stage solid-fuel rocket system managed by NASA’s Langley Research Center from 1957 to 1991. It was America’s first all-solid-fuel orbital launch vehicle. It used off-the-shelf military hardware to cut costs and boost reliability. It launched small scientific satellites, probes and re-entry payloads economically in 118 total flights. Dorothy Vaughan and her team used their new programming skills to write and run the complex mathematical algorithms required to compute the launch windows, flight paths and orbital trajectories for the Scout rocket, which sent America’s first satellites into space. Her work on the Scout program also proved that her team of Black women could excel at advanced computer programming, paving the way for their integration into NASA’s main workforce.

As a supervisor, Vaughan used her position to fight for the advancement of other women. She spent the next decade advocating for promotions, raises, and high-profile engineering assignments for both Black and white women across Langley, cementing her legacy as a champion for equality in STEM. /9
Dorothy Vaughan. As digital computing took over, the specialized “human computer” units were phased out. NASA dissolved the West Area Computers unit in 1958 and abolished segregated facilities and work units. Vaughan and many of her “computers” transitioned to NASA’s integrated Analysis and Computation Division. Because they already knew FORTRAN, they were able to code the complex formulas they used to compute by hand. During the late 1960s, Vaughan worked as a respected, expert FORTRAN programmer in the Numerical Techniques Branch. Alongside colleagues such as Katherine Johnson and Mary Jackson, she spent the late 1960s computing and coding the trajectories that ultimately landed Apollo 11 on the moon in 1969. Vaughan sought further management positions at Langley during this time. However, due to the lingering glass ceilings for women and people of color, she was never offered another leadership role.

Vaughan retired from NASA in 1971 after 28 years of historic service to the U.S. aerospace program. She returned to a private life in Hampton, Va., focusing on her family and community. She died on Nov. 10, 2008, at age 98, six days after Barack Obama’s election as the first Black president. /end
