When the Gatlinburg Wildfires happened in 2016, Dolly gave impacted families $1,000/month to help them get back on their feet. This included my father-in-law, who lost everything in the fire. Dolly gave children in TN free books each month, from birth to the age of five. She was a goddamn saint.

Something profound (for me) happened today. In a short note I wrote to one of my literary heroes, George Saunders, I included a link to an old piece I wrote about Kris Kristofferson that was published in 2009. He replied to me this morning, and I just keep reading it over and over. :)

I have been watching Portland City Council budget deliberations most of the day, and it has been remarkably interesting. Something important to me was on the agenda, but that notwithstanding, it's fascinating to listen and really give each member the benefit of the doubt. Not an easy job, theirs.
