It's happening! Fall colors are really beginning to pop. Also had a visit from a Northern flicker, which is easily one of my favorite birds to see.

Swamp white oak (Quercus bicolor) or Bur oak (Quercus macrocarpa)? Or perhaps even a hybrid of sorts? The white oaks have a real tendency to hybridize. I am leaning toward swamp white oak here based on the leaf shape, but the bark looks more like Bur oak so it could be a hybrid.

American chestnut in Monterey, MA. I love seeing these, even if they keep getting knocked back by the chestnut blight. Although the trees got wiped out over 100 years ago now, some of their roots remain and still produce basal sprouts. Talk about tenacity!

Here's another hybrid white oak example, also from Stockbridge, MA. This tree exhibits traits of both a white oak (Quercus alba) and a Bur oak (Quercus macrocarpa). There's quite a bit of leaf variation on the same tree. A white & bur oak hybrid is Bebb's oak (Quercus x bebbiana).
