Very good summary of the troubling changes for federally-regulated workers (and two good ones, tbh) in the omnibus legislation tables in parliament this week.

"federally regulated" = the ~10% of the job market in transportation, ports, telcom, banking.
Why unions say Canada's new labour bill will make strikes 'all but impossible' in regulated sectors
Experts say Ottawa's Building Canada Strong Act hands the labour minister and government 'unchecked' authority to suspend strikes based on 'national interest.'

So, can we do this without the union busting?
The Building Canada Strong Act means that investors will know: when Canada says it wants something built, Canadians will get it built.

After Ontario replaced the Endangered Species Act, ministry biologists were told they couldn't review developers' plans.

We found that over 12 have since left, feeling their jobs "stopped feeling meaningful."

We’ve been over this before:

Every Global 7500 that Bombardier builds in 🇨🇦 has 2 GE engines built in Indiana, 🇺🇸.

Every Challenger that Bombardier builds in 🇨🇦 has 2 Honeywell engines built in Arizona. 🇺🇸.

Bombardier employs 3,000+ 🇺🇸s & has 2,800 🇺🇸 suppliers.

Not so smart.

Lake Ontario's name comes from the Wyandot word Ontarí'io, which is typically translated as "beautiful lake". The Kanienʼkéha called it Katarokwi.
Samuel de Champlain called it Lac de St. Louis.
The name Lacus Ontario was first recorded in 1660 by Francis Creuxius.

Clearly a mistake to put so many eggs in the US basket. But can diversification be accomplished on the backs of small to medium enterprises? It’s hard for this non-economist to see that multinationals and foreign-owned businesses care at all about Canada’s economic independence and sovereignty.

If there was ever any doubt, the Gordie Howe Bridge fiasco proves it: You can't trust Trump's America, or any deal within this administration's orbit.

“But it must do so within a context in which the question “is it legal?” no longer makes sense. Instead, the question confronting Canada is: “How can a liberal-democratic nation survive next to a much more powerful country with no respect for the rule of law?”
It would be great if the Canadian government took this to heart. Judging from their actions, it's not clear that officials, and many business groups, truly understand that the old Canada-US relationship is over.

From November 2024.
Trump’s proposed tariffs against Canada and Mexico may be illegal, but that’s not the real problem
Amid Donald Trump’s latest tariff threat, Canada should be asking how a liberal-democratic nation survives next to a much more powerful country with no respect for the rule of law.

Sinclair draws a line from Tecumseh in 1812 to today’s Wab Kinew to remind us of the “inherent value in this 159-year-old project, imperfectly designed by the ancestors of Indigenous Peoples and Canadians and complicatedly handled by all of us today.”
It’s been a crazy couple of months speaking/working/teaching on the road (47/61 days!) & it will be nice to get to ceremonies this week. Here’s a piece I forgot to post last week but seems apropos now.

Stephen Lewis was the finest example of public servant.

He had a huge impact on public life in Canada for many years. I miss the days when politicians conducted themselves with the integrity, passion, respect, intellect and gravitas that he possessed. RIP to one of the great ones.

So many elements of this story are disturbing. Seriously, a DNA sample from a guy travelling to a demonstration in the US with nothing more seditious than a Canadian flag in his car?
