They're such a cool tree, like something out of time.

They became so popular as an ornamental in the UK (especially in parts of Scotland), they've been integrated into the local biome, 'naturalized', providing mast (nuts) for local fauna to eat.

They're also popular in Australia & New Zealand.

We didn't set strict criteria, for fear that it would lead to automatic bad decisions, so each one is taken on its merits. For instance, this Monkey Puzzle on one of our reserves near Blessington, Co. Wicklow. It's not invasive, does no harm to native wildlife, but is an interesting local landmark.

Tuesday morning view from my office : clematis, solanum , lilac, hawthorn and the Monkey Puzzle tree we planted when we bought the house in the last millennium.
View of an English back garden. Amongst the blooms are clematis, solanum, lilac and Hawthorne. There is also a rather splendid monkey puzzle tree on the left hand side.

@monkeypuzzlewatch.bsky.social I've been blogging my quest to see Monkey Puzzle Trees for a while now, and there is one place in the UK that anyone who loves Monkey Puzzle Trees should visit if they can, Robin Hood's Bower in Wiltshire. It is very special - uisffl.blogspot.com/2023/02/robi...

A low-angle, eye-level photograph of a garden path heavily carpeted in vibrant pink Rhododendron petals. In the foreground, the petals are in sharp focus, creating a textured magenta floor. Above, dark green branches laden with matching pink flowers frame the top and sides of the image like a natural arch. In the soft-focus background, a distinctive Monkey Puzzle tree stands centrally amongst lush green foliage, bathed in soft, diffused daylight. The mood is serene, lush, and magical.

My new hobby: spotting monkey puzzle trees in Portland. Here's my third sighting!
www.monkeypuzzlewatch.com/sightings/dd...
A fine teenage specimen
From the size and the date of the house whose yard it's in, I'm guessing this tree to be about 60 years old. Why? Because monkey puzzle saplings were given out

And last thing for today, I saw the flowers of a monkey puzzle tree. They're lovely and fuzzy, like paws.
The yellow, fluffy cone-shaped flowers of a monkey puzzle tree. (Apparently these are the female flowers. The male flowers are bigger and browner and a different shape.) The yellow, fluffy cone-shaped flowers of a monkey puzzle tree. The yellow, fluffy cone-shaped flowers of a monkey puzzle tree.

I've just had the loveliest walk on streets I go on every day, looking up instead of down, and noticing things I've never noticed before. Haven't found another monkey puzzle tree yet, but boy do we have a lot of tall evergreens in this town!

I was so interested in this house's sixties(?) door that at first I didn't see the giant monkey puzzle tree...
