One of the things I love love love about getting older is that so many of my things got older with me. I love that I’ve had my dishes and flatware for over a decade. I love that my living room rug has been with me for 20 years. I love that my winter coat has seen so many winters.

one of our newest volunteers is a first year undergrad who ran a typewriter repair business out of his parents' garage during high school. now he's fixing our duplicating machines - including this Ditto spirit duplicator (we just need to get the spirit recipe right and it'll be perfect)

Being nice to the toaster is for your own health. Cussing out your tractor isn't good for you but there's no victim. This isn't a moral issue. Agree with Tressie. Don't tell me what I can't say to my toaster. That's the offensive part of this
Why would we let Anthropic decide this for us?
If you ascribe to a moral philosophy or religion that disavows being mean to a toaster, that is fine.
It is not however fine for a tech company to make, functionally, a moral law for a talking word toaster that is promised to rule us one day.

I’m not so sure it’s okay to allow people to act out being abusive to even a simulation of a person. And it’s genuinely a beautiful aspect of human nature that we have to put in a bunch of mental effort *not* to form a (para)social bond with something, even if there’s no real subject there

I don’t think I’m ever going to get the appeal of pivoting to video for podcasts. I’ve been listening to podcasts for 20 years, and never once have I thought, my God, I need to SEE these people! I’m on a walk or doing the dishes, I don’t need video.

I have friends younger than 38 who look like this and they're wonderful people, and some of the worst people I know are conventionally attractive. Being hateful and misogynistic or kind and compassionate is who you are inside, not what you look like.
