Toronto's pro-housing movement.

More Neighbours in more neighbourhoods, with access to more jobs, more infrastructure, and more culture than ever before.
Oddly enough, Kandavel doesn't comment on the "incredible protectionism and NIMBYism" of certain neighbourhoods in his own ward, which he aids and abets.
You’d think this point about the downside of concentrating density in just a few high-rise areas would lead to Kandavel supporting things like sixplexes but, well, he contains multitudes, I suppose. thelocal.to/scarborough-...

Making housing possible is dependent on the three-legged stool that is all three levels of government in Canada, and these days we're lucky if we can even manage just two of those legs.
Alberta’s provincial government is cracking down on Edmonton for… allowing too much housing.
Guess we'll see what the details are tomorrow, but it appears the UCP gov't has found another way to gut the autonomy of city councils. There's not much left for them to conquer. The disrespect to local voters is real. #yeg #ableg

”This municipal election, candidates in our biggest cities should be judged on whether they will finally remove the barriers that keep homes scarce and expensive,“ says @1alexhemingway.bsky.social in his latest piece.

BC’s big cities must do better to fix the housing crisis
As municipal and provincial elections approach, BC’s biggest, most expensive cities should face scrutiny for their role in the ongoing housing crisis.

They are asking to raise $20,000 to hire lawyers to fight it at the OLT!

'He added infills are now seen as a little more “socially acceptable” than they were several years ago.'

'Uptake on small-scale infills may partially depend on how favourable local residents and councillors are towards multiplexes'

It's sad when homes are treated like a poor lifestyle-choice.
Our newest research project focuses on how municipal rules and processes impact the construction and cost of housing. With an issue that is so pressing and so multi-faceted, we have to be honest about the tradeoffs being made with design, zoning, and planning regulation.

More of Toronto’s new builds are multiplexes — but the city still lags Western counterparts
Small infill homes made up 10 times more of Toronto’s housing starts last year than in 2023, says the national housing agency, but the city still lags Western counterparts.

Ah yes the sanctity of Toronto's non-partisan municipal elections, where arguably the most important pro-housing voice on council is going to struggle to get re-elected against a replacement-level former Liberal MP
Toronto - Scarborough North Polling:

Chen: 37%
Myers: 31%
Dong: 12%
Li: 8%
Oleh: 6%

Others: 7%

Is infill "destroying" Edmonton's neighbourhoods? Here are the facts:

📊 Only 1% of RS-zoned properties redeveloped since 2024

🏡 Half of new units have 3+ bedrooms

🚇 Density is clustering near LRT

📉 Most mature neighbourhoods have fewer people than 50 years ago

Conservative MP and Housing Critic @scottaitchison.bsky.social has consistently been a thoughtful voice and leader on housing and greater density in Canadian cities.

It is to our benefit when there are pro-housing voices in all parties and we would like to thank Scott for his public service.

Was so great to be a part of @kevinrupasinghe.ca’s energetic campaign office opening and then go flyering after!

One part that really stuck with me is that the balance of power at City Hall hinges on the inner suburbs of Toronto. If we want change city-wide, it starts in places like Scarborough!

My entry into YIMBYism was a way to maintain Canada’s pro-immigration consensus, and at that we weren’t quite so successful.
We let national immigration policy be thwarted by the median council votes in Toronto and Vancouver and it's nuts to me that's not how this is understood.

One thing we've tried to emphasize at @moreneighboursto.bsky.social is Toronto is doing *neither* well. We aren't allowing enough private housing and we are making our affordable housing slow and expensive through our own processes (Housing Now still has produced 0 units in 7 years).
New literature review on housing ladder spillovers:

When rich tech workers move in, low-end rents go up. So does it follow that adding high-end homes would reduce them?

Yes. Changes at the top of the ladder can propagate down and affect prices at the bottom.
