Our existing policy was phones off, locked in tutor rooms from arrival until end of day. We now have the pouches, which has all but stopped the regular offenders. Seems sensible, but can imagine a big change for some schools, going from possibly relaxed attitudes to zero tolerance.

The line between science fiction and science fact is getting thin.

AI chips, autonomous systems, machines making decisions for themselves… suddenly the Terminator future doesn’t feel quite so fictional.

The question isn’t whether we can. It’s whether we should.

Start of term:

- new to teaching?
- new classes and set lists?
- new colleagues

Getting a name right - for staff and students - matters.

"If I can pronounce Daithí, Fiadh and Bloem correctly...."

If you don't know, ask.

Nerves before the start of term?

Obviously. Had them before every term since I started. But anxiety? Nah, let’s not get carried away. Sometimes nerves are just nerves.

Sometimes nerves are just nerves.

Not every bout of apprehension needs upgrading to ‘anxiety.’

When Grease came out in 1978, it was set in the summer of 1959.

If Grease came out today it would be set in the summer of 2007.

2007 is now as much a period piece to 2026 as 1959 was to 1978. Let that sink in. 😭

But 2007 was only last week...

I only discovered today, on my drive to @parkrunUK, that Škoda is actually pronounced Shkoda.

I'm starting to question everything now.

Last full day here, so we went for a walk. It was like Jurassic park. What a wonderfully complex and contrasting place New Zealand is. I feel like I've seen more contrasting climates, landscapes and scenery in 3 weeks than any other place I've visited..

Reflections from today:

“It takes a village to raise a child."

But let’s not ignore the other truth: it can also take a village to fail one.

Reflections: confirmation bias looms large in edu-discourse. If our likes and retweets mostly reinforce what our tribe already believes, how often are we genuinely challenging our own thinking?

I left this in the car side pocket a few weeks ago.

Today, during a routine drive, it exploded.

Football selling out too far? It's been monetised for decades. Fans have been priced out by silly ticket prices and multiple TV subscriptions, while competitions like the Champions League have been expanded to maximise revenue... it all became a product while we watched.

I've realised over the last 48 hours that falling backwards and landing hard on your backside hurts a lot more in your (late, late) 40s than it ever did when you were 10.
