my theory is that this woolly obfuscation isn’t supposed to persuade people that AI is conscious as much as it’s supposed to overwhelm them with philosophical complications that make them feel out of their depth and convince them there’s simply no way of knowing for sure
my twitter feed is all these people saying that AI might be conscious, but instead of making a particular case for that, they just say, well u know I mean consciousness is pretty weird. how do u know people are conscious. robots COULD be conscious, etc. And I wonder who this is persuasive for

I keep seeing people say some version of "it used to be normal to politely disagree on things before the Internet," and I don't think that's right. It was and remains normal to not be a shithead in face-to-face communication. We just have less of that now, and WAY less with people we disagree with.

I ran an acorn foraging workshop today for a colleague’s food history class! Knowing some students would inevitably come face to face with their first acorn weevil while cracking nuts, I made a few little pins as prizes for weevil-finding 🐛
