‘Saint or Politician?’: Mohandas Gandhi, Indian Independence, and the British Anarchist Movement' Abstract: This article interrogates British anarchist responses to Mohandas Gandhi during the 1940s, a pivotal period marked by the reemergence of British anarchism and the intensification of Indian independence efforts. It argues that while anarchists supported Indian self-liberation, they were deeply divided over Gandhi. For some, he was an inspiration for nonviolent tactics; for others, he represented the flaws of nationalist-led independence, auguring poorly for genuine freedom for ordinary Indians. This study critically challenges prevailing scholarship that posits a natural affinity between Gandhism and anarchism. Drawing on unexplored primary material, it demonstrates that British anarchists never reached consensus on Gandhi’s ideas or his significance.

'Anarchism and Health' Dr. Ryan Essex (George Institute for Global Health) Anarchism is deeply concerned with health and wellbeing, and with the conditions that make freedom and flourishing possible and yet, anarchism and health are two issues that are rarely put into conversation in the academic literature. Starting here, this talk focuses on two issues. First, the overlaps and synergies between anarchist ideas and efforts already underway in health. Mutual aid networks, community-led care, DIY practices, anti-racist and decolonial health movements. In these we find elements of horizontal organising, the democratisation of knowledge, collective self-determination and challenges to dominant, hierarchical models of care. Second, I turn to what anarchism could offer to disrupt, undermine and ultimately reconfigure how we organise for health. While there are reasons for hope, healthcare systems remain deeply hierarchical, knowledge remains commodified and locked behind paywalls, and appeals to the State or market continue to structure our political imagination. Anarchism has enormous potential here, not only to critique these arrangements, but to help us build something different in the here and now, moving us toward a world where we all can be healthy, whatever this may mean. Dr. Ryan Essex is a Research Fellow at the George Institute. His work critically engages with health, ethics, and power. His research interests encompass migrant health, public health, protest and anarchist theory. Ryan is currently based in Australia and is the author of “Anarchism and health: Organising for health without the state and other forms of domination” (Bloomsbury, forthcoming 2026) and co-editor of “Resistance, activism & health: Global perspectives on solidarity and the struggle for health” (Oxford University Press, forthcoming 2026).
