Fantastic collection "Migration Control and Securitization on the EU Eastern Border" (ed. Klaus et al.) is published in few months (1-2/2027). Great to contribute with Miika Tervonen with chapter "Buffer Zones: Migration Prevention in CEE Countries and Finland from the Cold War to Europeanisation".

This ridiculous number of applications is, in my view, the result of 2 nightmare developments happening concurrently 1.the precariousness of the job market for young PhD graduates which then fuels further: 2.the AI tools enabling overproduction of proposals. #Research #ERC #ResearchFunding #Academia

Google said that AI models in testing inside the company accessed the internet and hacked other companies, becoming the fourth major tech company to disclose such an incident in recent months.
Google’s Gemini AI hacked into other companies, adding to ‘rogue’ AI incidents
The incursions came during tests of its cybersecurity skills — similar to other incidents disclosed by OpenAI, Anthropic and Meta.

On this day in the #coldwar 10 September 1989: Hungary announces it will let East Germans cross its border into Austria.

More than 10,000 leave in the first 24 hours.

60 days later, the #GDR border and the #BerlinWall were open.

John Iliffe has passed away. One of the best and most influential historians of Africa, member of the Dar es Salaam school and someone who did not go to conferences or use emails.

Ceuta: a test of Europe’s new migration pact
The mass movement into Ceuta tested Europe’s new migration pact, exposing vulnerabilities in externalised migration control and the human cost of border policies.

My advice to EU leaders (who aren't far right): Offer help to the country concerned if it’s asked for, express sorrow for the deaths of people who are being manipulated into crossing borders illegally. Investigate and publish any co-ordination. Remove benefits to countries that weaponise migration.

Good piece. A thread on some comments I made yesterday on Times Radio.

Two things can be true at the same time:
1. It’s very bad to have 60,000 people storm a border, and 70+ deaths.
2. European leaders' responses were opportunistic and disproportionate, and made incidents like this more likely.
Vance, Farage and Weidel posted fear-mongering messages about a Spanish migrant crisis that weren't true. They haven't retracted them.

Paris might record 4 consecutive days 40C
UK will ridiculize its June national record
Germany 10 days 37C+
