I post practice exams so students can test their knowledge and understanding. So they can practice the types of questions they’ll get. So they’ll go back and revisit stuff they got wrong on the exam with their notes.

If the goal is about reinforcing and checking student learning and understanding, then that goal is undermined when students are unprepared for the question formats, when they don’t know what’s important, or how to prepare themselves.

The point of exams should not be “gotchas” designed to trick students. They should not be a “weed out” mechanism designed to force failure of some students.
They can instead be a tool for learning - a “hey, learn this because it’s so important I’m going to check” roadmap for the course content.

Jenn has always been like the AAPI academic who I grew up respecting the most because she really cares about academic growth and this ENTIRE THREAD makes so much sense. Please give it a read.
Saw a social media post somewhere complaining that students these days want a lot of class material pre-processed for them. And a lot of those complaints are valid bc students are looking to shortcut doing the active learning and synthesis that will lead to better understanding.

The best way to see HOPE (호프, 2026) is in theaters - the less I say, the better. Sure I have gripes but the pros overwhelmingly outweigh the cons. Wife & I had a dynamite time last nite so ignore the haters and enjoy!

I was not expecting 1986's YAKUZA WIVES (極道の妻たち) to be THIS GOOD. Full of aura and pain, the movie puts the wives & mistresses of the yakuza on full display as Japan's working class is slowly eviscerated by the dark underbelly of Japan's bubble economy. No wonder this was a hit in Japan!

The issue to me with Minus One’s ballyhooed anti-war stance is that, like, 80%+ of the criticism is leveled at the way the war was carried out (no regard for the human value of the *Japanese* soldier) instead of reckoning with war generally or the empire’s actions.

As someone who isn't a fan of Minus One, one thing to note from the new Minus Zero trailer is 鳴る神 (Narukami) - literally 'thundering god'... just FYI...

RIP Chen Kuan Tai. An absolute legend of Shaw Brothers action that will be missed by all of us. If you've never heard of the guy, definitely give Gallants, Killer Constable & The Boxer from Shantung a try, along with with his villain arc in Crippled Avengers. RIP man - you were a real one!

This is why Andor (the series) was so powerful and well received. It's about the reality of living in that system, how to fight back, and the costs that you incur when you do. It's much more powerful and meaningful than Rise of Skywalker which is just rehashed fears from the 1950s.

I would also point out that Star Wars falls under this same problem; it was born from a very rational Boomer fear of a techno-facist state crushing people's freedom. But the problem is that the techno-facist state is here. Warning about its impending takover is no longer an interesting message.

The fears of the boomer generation (corporations would take over) have come true. So, Scott pivoted to a neurotic obsession with the asinine panspermia theory. Which is where this franchise is now. Very few people who aren't 70+ years old thinks panspermia is a neat idea to explore.

Yesterday, I finished an OVA I've been meaning to see for the last 30 years. It was a revelation of sight & sound that harkens me back to my summers watching anime with friends. And as Parm's journey ends, so to does summer and the adventures that came with it.

For me, James Lew was the face of Asian America for martial arts action. Despite being a jobber, henchman, or villain most of the time, he really stood out as a hero or an ally, and I find it sad that one of the few times he was an MC was in his directorial debut. RIP man.
