This note describes how working life is like for a scientist in federal agency.

The post is about NIH but what it is described is the same we are experiencing at NASA Earth Sciences. Written a few months ago, it is still very valid.

What Happens When Science Is Asked to Pretend This Is Normal
In our All-Hands meetings before I left NIH, our leaders were always trying to think of ways to accommodate the new leadership, pitching ideas they thought would fit the “MAHA” agenda.

NASA Earth Science is being destroyed little by little:

divert money originally committed for contractor scientists (like post docs) salaries to pay to those recently retired civil servants who voluntarily left but are still being paid (a sort of) severance

The steady and slow destruction of science at #NASA

No More library
I am posting some photos of the NASA Goddard library taken yesterday. The photos were NOT taken by library employees - but rather by others at NASA Goddard . Word has it that trucks are arriving this weekend to begin removal of these boxes. More: nasawatch.com/trumpspace/n... #NASA

But what about the contractors?

In many centers, they make up 2/3 of the total workforce—especially in the Earth Science Division.

These workers have zero protections: no severance and none of the RIF rules that federal employees enjoy.

Contractors are lucky if they get 3 months' notice.

Despite the talk, "Reductions in Force" (RIFs) haven't officially hit #NASA.

Instead, the agency relied on voluntary retirements with severance for civil servants. Official RIFs have strict rules and bring the kind of bad publicity leadership wants to avoid.

This figure is misleading; the actual reduction was significantly higher. Here are at least two reasons why:

An appeal to the new administrator to save #NASA Earth Sciences.

I think it is well said.

But at the same time late in the sense that the damage is already structural and irreparable.

Now it is a matter of starting over (if it ever happens)

I cannot avoid noticing that space science organizations are more vocal and active in providing #NASA science related policy information.

NASA is a big founder of Earth Sciences, yet major ES societies like AGU, AMS or GSA seem like they are MIA on this matter.

NASA will finally have a 2026 budget and an administrator

but still not good news for Earth Sciences.

Despite the title of this article, I take issue with this "better" scenario. It may reflect the author’s bias.
