I’ve made the trip from Universal City to LAX many times, and I’m not sure it’s ever been the same way twice. Today’s route went through downtown and is on the 110 to the 105. Nice view of DTLA on the way in. (Pardon the reflection!)

The Uber driver for my ride back to the airport is Liberian and asked what I’d eaten while I was here. He listened then suggested next time I look for a place that serves jollof rice. I’m no Anthony Bourdain, but I’m definitely going to seek this out. Sounds delicious.

I’m in Minneapolis, it’s 70° with no humidity, and I just had a very good Mediterranean dinner outside. I regret nothing. I just wish I could share that with all of you suffering in the heat and humidity back home (like I will be this weekend).

I live near Raleigh NC, and my house backs up to a natural wooded area. How concerned should I be about otherwise healthy looking trees like these here being too close together? (1/)

Just saw Project Hail Mary for the second time. It’s definitely a movie I wish I could see again for the first time, but what I gave up in the thrill of the first viewing I gained in noticing some of the things I missed the first time because I was too wound up.

Just saw Project Hail Mary for the second time. It’s definitely a movie I wish I could see again for the first time, but what I gave up in the thrill of the first viewing I gained in noticing some of the things I missed the first time because I was too wound up.
When you've had the driest start to a year since records began, a forecast like this is enough to bring your local meteorologist, hydrologist, climatologist, farmer, river keeper, and water manager to tears.

I'm disappointed that the Jankowski goal was disallowed, but it's great that the review opened up everything and they awarded the penalty shot on a foul the refs didn't call the first time through. I don't hate that at all.

Got some more data yesterday on model verification - there is a definitive decreasing trend in global model scores that raises concerns about NWS upper air struggles. But this is a complex scientific problem that needs dedicated experiments to understand what the actual impacts might be.
Verification data from global models for the Northern Hemisphere in 2025 showed a notable decrease in skill, not just for the NWS GFS model but nearly all global models. While this is suggestive of NWS upper air struggles being a contributing factor, it is not definitive. More: tinyurl.com/nhh2jamw

4pm today: 39.9°, N wind gusting to 31 mph
A 49.2°F drop, multiple hours of winds 30+ — oh — and a round of very gusty thunderstorms, too (with wind damage reported not far away).
Fun day for weather fans.

The first two bowl games today were meh - some excitement but outcome not in doubt for much of the game.
The Sugar Bowl, OTOH, is more than making up for any lack of excitement. Well into the 4th quarter and I have no idea who’s going to win.
