Regulatory history maven here. Pre-FDR Wall Street relied on self-regulation. But the rewards for bad behavior were high, as they are for feral AI now, and the risk of meaningful punishment was low, as it is for AI now. So the bad guys got stronger than the good guys. It ended badly.
"They can self-police. They can self-regulate."

As even AI execs themselves call for regulation, and some say there's a chance humanity itself is on the line... Spineless Speaker Johnson makes it clear this Republican-led congress will do nothing.
