We rewrote one internal tool to use Rust (instead of TS/Node) as a proof of concept/trial balloon, and yesterday switched over one of our hourly jobs to use it instead of the TS version that it had been using. Over 10× better memory usage and 10–100× improvement in how fast it runs. 🤩

I am being a bit quiet on the socials and blog because I broke my arm and messed up my hand a couple of weeks ago. Hopefully, normal service resumes in a few weeks.

Does anyone know why ripgrep is soooooo much slower on macOS than Linux these days? On the left is my AMD Ryzen 9 7940HS laptop and on the right is my M2 mac mini. Both searching the same revision of Chromium and both are hot in the OS page cache.

On one hand, this (the post and the thread) is absolutely true and valid. On the other, 'letting more people in' is a strategy of the management class for lowering wages. That and the equivalent but with AI is what has made me a lot colder on "we need to let more people in".
If a few rich assholes saying shit you don't like about coding is all it took to flip you out of Obama era progress on "we need to let more people in" and into this era's "fuck you for not being in" then you basically never internalized the evidence here.
