I don't know who needs to hear this, but the doom claim is independent of the consciousness claim, and the intelligence claim. The doom claim - in Hinton's form (charitably reconstructed) - is evolutionary: it doesn't take intelligence to satisfy the conditions for evolution to occur. 1/6

2nd time @springer.springernature.com has unsubmitted this paper. This time for only having an abstract on the title page. I guess it's important that reviewers get two copies of the abstract? Of course, they don't mention this requirement on the submission page, or the first time they unsubmitted.

Everything in this thread. But also: oil companies are behaving exactly like AI companies. If it's true that AI companies can't really believe their products are dangerous, because they're continuing to develop them were any good, then the parallel argument wrt oil companies would also be.
I resigned from ExxonMobil today. I spent the last three years doing fossil fuel extraction research at both BP and ExxonMobil. Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing to maximize extraction while the window to act closes, and gambling with our lives. More below.

There’s a lot to say about De Gaulle: Resistance. Little of it good. Among other things, its attitude toward the colonies is straight out 1950. The only time we hear North African voices, they speak Hebrew!
